I felt very alone during my 2007 middle-aged deconversion, despite living in the most unchurched part of the country (Pacific Northwest). However, as time passed fellow faith-expats like Seth Andrews published their exodus stories and I began to feel like I was part of a burgeoning movement. Reading "Deconverted" was like a trip through memory lane, and I easily identified with the story of a man who, after decades in the Church, finally figured out it was a house of cards and abandoned a comfortably numb religious fantasy for the soothing balm of atheist rationality.Mr. Andrews and I are both Generation X and therefore experienced many of the same Christian rites of passage, such as being scared towards God by the apocalyptic "Thief in the Night" cheese-fest series of movies and rocking out in a holy way to righteous acts like Petra and the Imperials. He got saved at a much earlier age than I did due in no small part to the influence of his Christian parents, but our post-conversion result was the same: a passion for all things Jesus and a quest to become a "man of God" via the Scriptural use of spiritual gifts and natural talents.In the author's case, coming of age during the big boom of contemporary Christian music in the 80s and 90s led Mr. Andrews to his calling as a Christian radio deejay. At first life seemed divinely ordered, but as time went on he began to question his beliefs as he grieved over the senseless deaths of devout Christian musicians Keith Green and Rich Mullins, cringed at the excesses of evangelical luminaries such as Oral Roberts, and recoiled from the horrifying actions of religious fanatics during 9/11. Mr. Andrews' once fiery faith began to sputter and he settled into what a more zealous believer would call a "lukewarm" mindset.But as the saying goes: "when the student is ready, the master will appear." This fateful event happened for Mr. Andrews (and me as well) when the New Atheists began releasing their controversial and hard-hitting tomes. In particular, raconteur Christopher Hitchens made a strong impression on the author with his witty and articulate demolition of all things religious. The last of Mr. Andrews' Christianity fell before the onslaught of Mr. Hitchens and his rational comrades, and he was reborn with a new mission as founder of The Thinking Atheist and producer of podcasts and video resources for non-believers.Each chapter of "Deconverted" begins with an encouraging quote from a member of The Thinking Atheist Internet community. In addition to his personal tale, Mr. Andrews has gathered some of the gorier and more contradictory aspects of the Bible that are usually ignored or rationalized by believers (provided they actually read their holy book, which is less common than you might expect). His categorization of Christian apologetic archetypes was familiar and insightful as well (check out Bill Maher's fine documentary "Religulous" for real-life examples in the wild).After finishing the book I was inspired to hit the Web and investigate Mr. Andrews' organization and other atheist-related websites and Facebook groups. I bought and read this book in 2012. I even used it in my own book, Through the Lens of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. However, it is still an important book for all to read. What struck me then and now are all the ways the medical establishment has undermined and denigrated the African body. When I encourage people to read the book, I tell them that the Tuskegee experiment is only one chapter in a book with 15 chapters. There has been so much under-the-radar activity that continues to encourage people to think less of the African Diaspora citizens who live with us. Our current Zika virus conversation is another twist for the books, which is probably an extension of the AIDS virus. Harriet Washington also takes us into a activities and conversation about Eugenics, which established stereotypes about African bodies more toxic and more menacing than biologically possible. This past week I was in a conversation about a Black woman who need a bone marrow donors. Her probably best match will be another black person, we're told. As a Black female and a medical professional, I find this book to be an "eye opener"! I work for a world class institution and have found that medical exploitation of minorities in general and poor blacks specifically, is on going. Income level play a major role in the disparities, regardless of what you hear, that "all of our patients are treated equally, regardless of income." Blacks must learn to speak up, question what it is you don't understand and not be afraid to ask for second opinions. You have a Patient Bill of Rights that should be posted in every medical facility. READ IT ! You have a right to ask that a doctor, nurse, aid personnel, data collector etc. speak in a language that YOU understand.Don't sign anything that you don't understand ! If you are having any type of invasive procedure, be sure that it is a Board Certified Specialist in that area of expertise performing it. Not a Resident Surgeon, unless the "expert surgeon" is present and observing and/or assisting. Get a POAHC and make sure it is someone who is vocal and assertive on YOUR behalf, when you are unable to speak for yourself. Having a degree is not a prerequisite for the latter.

This is such an important read for anyone interested in the history of black folks in the US and how the white population has continually oppressed the black population in cruel and gruesome ways. Washington is an amazing writer - even though she is writing about history (which can sometimes be a bit of a bore to read), she writes in a way that makes the text easy to read and understand, and make you want to keep reading. I also really liked how she focused on the prison system as a tool of medical oppression of the black community, because this point is often overlooked by a lot of scholars who decidedly chose not to pay attention to the prison population. Good book, great information!

This is just another reason why African-Americans deserve and should be demanding reparations! The US and possibly the world medical industry/profession owe a great debt to all the African-American families whose lives were destroyed, maimed or harmed by these experiments not to mention the racist stereotypes that were attached to us for the sake of "progress" Black people suffered treatment that wouldn't be applied to animals and I am sure this book is only scratching the surface of the atrocities committed.

I think this book is extremely important and informative, but I am disappointed by the poor copy editing. I am halfway through so far, and have found numerous issues with spelling, capitalization, and omitted letters, not to mention several ambiguous or redundant sentences. Yes, it's an emotionally difficult read, but someone at Random House should have taken the time to parse it more carefully!

But hopefully most of the time (not to sound greedy, but if the guys can, we should also get to feel orgasms, right?!). Being unsatisfied is not something you want to talk loudly about, as it could be very hurting to your partner. And if mentioned in the wrong way, it could make things worse. Anxiety for performance can make it all very awkward and do more harm than good. However, after reading this book, I see a way to communicate this, in a better way. We could read it together, and explore together. Take it one step at a time, and enjoy the process. This is a great intervention program for girls in the school. The lessons need to be adapted to the time frame of an actual school day as there just is not enough time to do multiple activities in one session, but the girls LOVED this group. I will use it over and over. I also enjoyed all of the printable materials and resources. It is a well thought out program and it is a great package.

I am a school counselor at an elementary school grade K-5. I have several friendship/social skills groups and this book is amazing! Love that it has a cd to print the papers you will need. Get this book for your resources its a must have!

I wanted something that would make running groups more fun for me and for my students, but I found this book is not always going to be a click, print, and run to your group. Some of the activities require a little prep, or materials you might not find readily available. So always be a day ahead of yourself. My students were always excited to see what we doing for the week!

I had bought the Girls in Real Life Situations book for 6th grade and up and LOVED it. I decided to buy this one for younger grades. There are not as many exercises/activities in this one, but there are a lot of handouts , such as, word finds. This book is still handy and I have used a lot of the activities inside of it. Both of these books have been, hands down, the best group activity books I have ever purchased. They are realistic in regards to time, materials, finances, etc.

The lessons seemed unoriginal to me. I wasn’t impressed.

I purchased this book to help facilitate a fifth grade girls group who were struggling with friendship issues, aggressiveness, and cliques. I use some of the activities in the book to help start conversation, but I found some of the activities to be shallow and geared toward a younger crowd (perhaps third or fourth grade). However, the book is categorized into different aspects of development and does offer some good suggestions to build cohesiveness within the group.

Highly recommended for counseling girl groups. The girls responded very well and look forward to attending girls group weekly. The book has wonderful ideas and tips for parents as well. It was a great buy.

I was introduced to this product by another professional. It had just the activities I was looking for when working with girls. I would highly recommend it.
