About the Author

Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University, winning several teaching awards at both schools. He recently accepted an endowed professorship at Lewis and Clark College, where he teaches microeconomics and urban economics. He is the author of the best-selling textbook, Urban Economics, currently in its sixth edition. Professor O'Sullivan's research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Law and Economics. Professor O'Sullivan lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. For recreation, he enjoys hiking, boogie-boarding, paragliding, and squash.   Steven M. Sheffrin is dean of the division of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics and has served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of Treasury. He has been on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, since 1976 and has served as the chairman of the department of economics. He received his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Sheffrin is the author of 10 other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include Rational Expectations (second edition) and Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13 (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri Sexton). Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics at all levels, from large introduction to principles classes (enrollments of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics.  He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) in Davis, California, and has two daughters who have studied economics. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis.   Stephen Perez is chair of the economics department at California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his B.A. in economics at the University of California, San Diego, he received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Davis, in 1994. He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to California State University, Sacramento, in 2001. He teaches macroeconomics at all levels as well as econometrics, sports economics, labor economics, and mathematics for economists.  Professor Perez's research explores most macroeconomic topics. In particular, he is interested in evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics, and sports economics. If you are taking Microeconomics and you need this textbook ask your professor first if you need to use the myeconlab online access. This book is available online through the publisher's website that you can take quizzes and do homework through them. The access code from the publisher's website cost less than the textbook book though, if you are like me that is much more comfortable reading a text book than reading it online this book is the way to go.And it really doesn't matter if it's hardbound or softbound book, new or used, it is the same thing and you will learn same stuff.

this is a very helpful book for micro economics. it has helped me through this difficult class that i was bad at

the words are not hard, the concepts are pretty straight-forward, good organization for the most part. most of the time it is common sense, read the first 2 sentences of every paragraph and you will get the jist. explains things in details, recommend for economics beginner

For this book the person i purchased it from got me the book on time and it even included a My EconLab passcode that wasnt used which saved me $50 dollars since i also needed that for school! :)!!

The only reason I rated that I liked this product is because I can accept outcome. I did not experience any issues with this buyer, since the shipping process was on time! I have never bought a used book because I worry that it would have a good quality. But this book was in great shape. There is highlighting, but it's not a problem. However, I did see a few ripped pages, which I'm not thrilled about that. But I can deal with it only because I am a college students that needs all the material that should be contained in this book. So because the book is readable, not a damaged, nor missing any pages, I am satisfied with this product. I would buy things from this seller again, but I'll stick to NEW books because of personal preferences.

The product came right when they said it would and in great condition. I'm really happy. I would recommend purchasing from this retailer because the product I bought was a great deal and it came on time.

This is an important book for any photographer.A. It assumes you are familiar with and own studio lights.B. It also assumes you are a pro photographer.It is very well written in terms of lighting, angles, modifiers, camera settings, etc. nothing is left out. You are able to see the finished image as well as the set-ups. The book is short on theory as it is very practical book.Bottom line: If you want to shoot fashion or learn how to achieve "The Look" this book is a necessary start, and worth every penny.

As a professional photographer for over 30 years I find this book very interesting. The book reveals more about how the photographer was thinking about each photo and why more so than how they did it. I like that approach, other readers looking for more details may not. Gatcum tells me just enough about what was used to create the lighting allowing me to verify my own read on what was done and also answer the old how did they do that? Some of the shots are done simply and some have all sorts of lighting going on. The interesting part is getting a read on the why of each image as much as the how. I find myself just enjoying the book and it's images rather than feeling I am reading a textbook.

The variety of photos in this book was surprising. Although it doesn't always go into the deepest detail for the lighting set-up, the diagrams and resulting photos are enough to get you started, or at least to let you decide if that is a direction you want to consider.If you've ever attempted to replicate photos from a magazine and couldn't quite figure out the lighting differences between their photo and yours, this make let you in on the missing link.

I grabbed this book in hopes that it would fire up my creative juices by sharing some fashion inspired lighting ideas. I had hoped for insights in the how's and why's to give me some ideas that I may not have considered.In my opinion it falls a bit short of that mark. Yes there are a large number of sample images and descriptions of the lighting. Unfortunately the lighting descriptions in 99% of the circumstances don't mention anything about the lighting ratios, and what's almost worse than that is that there is little insight about what the photographers were after. Why they chose to light things the way they did. With these two drawbacks you're left with: a) recipe for a cake that tells you the ingredients, but not the quantities. b) A sample result with no insight as to why the lighting formula was chosen in the first place.Another thing about this book that may be of interest to another photographer is that I'd estimate that of the 50 examples, I'd bet that half of them are natural light. Yes, it's good to hear that natural light can be used effectively but what I had expected and hoped for was studio lighting templates.While the book makes no real claims about post processing tips there are a few mentions of using PS for specific effect. And since just about everyone is shooting in digital these days, information on processing those digital negatives can be pretty crucial. Unfortunately when post processing is mentioned there is almost no detail for someone needing direct guidance in that area.I don't think that I would recommend this book.

This book does have some good concepts. There is a glossary of photography lighting concepts at the beginning that it fairly detailed. What I learned after reading this book was that this was just filler to make the book bigger and therefore justify the price.The concepts in this book are not outlined well enough to be taken seriously. For that, I would recommend you look at something more comprehensive by someone like Scott Kelby.

This book really helped me understand the entire concept of lighting! I've tried multiple setups featured in the book and it hasn't failed me yet! Awesome book to check out to up your photography skills.

I read this years ago right after graduating from high school. This book was a life changer for me. I was heavily indoctrinated in the Catholic church and felt that by even reading this book and daring to speculate about its contents that the church roof would fall in on my head the next time I went to church. Although it was close to heresy for me to read about the early formation of the church, the good news is that I'm still here! The roof did not cave in on me and I continue to be fascinated with the line between historical, man-made doctrine and what went into the Bible as we know it now. Gnostic gospels takes the nag hammadi (sp) scrolls and shows that there were many gospels around the time of Christ. The fact that these gospels were jarred up and buried shows that they were not the favored gospels and possession was tantamount to death. Why were they different? Is it because these gospels talked about finding God within instead of using the priestly class as intermediaries? Or perhaps it was because this group of gospels treated women equal with men? Both concepts were diametrically opposed to the books that survived. So what else is there in these books and how exactly does a religion founded in blood, and reinforced by crusades and inquisitions further the true message of God? This book is a good place to start answering questions like that. Everyone will have their own opinion, but at least by reading the book it will be an informed decision.

All of my life I have felt that something important was missing from my relationship with God. Reading this work helped me to fill in the holes that orthodox Christianity built deep inside. Call it The Mysterys, call it gnosis. Call it what you will, but I found myself and my God when I read this work.

I began this book with a fascination for the ancient Minoan civilization, a keen interest in with the people and cultures of the eastern Mediterranean, and knowing virtually nothing about Gnosticism. What an enlightening and enjoyable book the author has produced. The book is based upon her interpretations of fragments of early texts, written in Coptic during the first two hundred years following the crucifixion. Pagels summarizes not just the writings of these early spiritual leaders, but also the social and political issues of the day.The Gnostic texts, discovered in 1948 buried in a remote Egyptian cave, describe a spiritual tradition of meditation, inner visions, and self-discovery, rather than a quest for salvation. The author's translation and interpretation from the Gospel of Thomas follows: "There is light within a man of light, and it lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness."In Pagels' reconstruction of the period, another profound distinction between the Gnostics and the orthodox view that became the Roman Catholic church, was the participation of women and men as equals in their religious traditions. Mary Magdalen as apostle, is the prominent example. The texts describe God in both masculine and feminine terms with a complementary description of human nature. The book is a fascinating look into the founders and the founding of Christianity.

Because so much is revealed, it becomes very clear why these books were kept of the Bible. Highly recommend to all who are true seekers.

This book provides a fascinating review of not only the general contents of the gnostic gospels but it provides a historical evolution of the early church. This historical review shows how the early church had to deal with many views of Christ and what his words and life meant and how the early church silenced these voices to reflect the structure that ensured their power, influence and success survived. A must read for anyone who wants to know how the early evolved.

This is a wonderfully written, interesting, nich book about theological influences in the two centuries after Christ died. It features the Gnostic influence on the early Church and the discoveries of original Gnostic texts, which were not included in dogma and the New Testament. Every Christian should read this book because it discusses the very basic core beliefs of Christianity and why the basic beliefs of the Catholic and Protestant churches came to be - and - the theological disagreemets about these core beliefs from the Gnostic and Orthodox sides. I downloaded this book at Amazon onto my Kindle. This book isn't for everbody, in fact, it may enrage some people because of the difference in the Gnostic view about the origin, nature, personhood, and purpose of Christ. It is draws heavily on discovered Gnostic texts and the real hatred of the Gnostics by orthodox Church leaders at the time - from their own orthodox writings. The disaffection flows from both sides in no uncertain terms. These disagreements come down to life and death decisions. For example, Gnostics looked at orthodorx Christians, who went to martyrdom in varous forms of torture and death, as wasting their lives for nothing, not understanding Christ's true purpose and message. These Christians were ignorant in the eyes of the Gnostics. Gnostics opened their church to all: men and women were equal, all social classes were welcome and women particpated in church functions on equal footing with men. Gnostics rejected the orthodox power structure brought on by orthodox bishops. To Gnostics, there were different levels of spiritual knowledge. The book also shows the influence, on the Gnostics, by Buddhism. This is a fascinating book based on the Gnostic texts discovered at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt, December 1945. My niece loved this as a gift.

Just a caution. My 11 year old was enjoying this book, until he came to this part: page 198: "...his mother fell down the stairs... [she] was hurt so badly that she couldn't move; she'd broken her legs and an arm, and she had other internal damage. Little Frederick was the only person who could help. but being so young [9] and frightened, he didn't know what to do. He simply held his mother at the bottom of the stairs and screamed. By the time they were discovered, Frederick's mother had died."I felt that was a little unnecessarily traumatic. If your child is a gentle soul, or a hero-type like mine, this may be a little disturbing. It gave him bad dreams. I would have liked to have known about this before he started reading it, so maybe another parent will benefit from the fore-knowledge.

My rating of 3 stars is probably lower than what my 4th and 5th grade readers of animal-fantasy will give it. For them, the ability for animals, zoo and those thought to be extinct, to travel between the natural world and a more fantastic one is likely to grab their attention immediately. Throwing in a group of four friends with a treehouse fort who seek out adventure, a missing club member, developing relationships between humans and animals, evil Sasquatch creatures, and some magic means that I will buy this series for both my libraries. It is my hope that in future installments that Chick backs off the over-describing and the grandstanding/gushing done by Mr. Darby as he pleads his case for the saving of the Secret Zoo and the council that supports its existence. I am also hoping for a bit more depth in the character development of our four Action Scouts and more subtlety in setting us up for subsequent books. With this being his first book and it having such a unique premise, I am looking forward to watching the series unfold and improve in literary quality. But I will purchase them one at a time as I read them to be sure that aspect does improve. I recommend this book for readers in grades 4-8 who enjoy series such as Mull’s Fablehaven and O’Hearn’s Pegasus.

I bought this book for my 7 (almost 8) year old Granddaughter. She loved it. Parts she read herself and parts I read to her. For her there were parts that were 'kinda scary' and parts that made her laugh out loud. She is thinking about passing book 1 on to a friend. I just ordered her book 2; to quote my Granddaughter, "I can't wait!".

The Secret Zoo by Bryan Chick is a fun, fast-paced story about friendship, family, and (best of all) awesome animals. Mr. Chick seamlessly blends mystery and magic into a modern fairy tale, part detective novel and part adventure into Narnia.I downloaded The Secret Zoo after hearing about it at a local elementary school. I'm glad I did. I read it out loud to my 10-year-old (at the time) son and wife. We all enjoyed the book. The main characters are nice kids that my son could identify with. He especially liked Richie, the comic-relief character and adorable goofball. All of the characters, though, took a backseat to the awesome animals. I think I've mentioned them. Along their adventures in the Secret Zoo, the Action Scouts (the name the heroes give themselves collectively) meet and befriend polar bears, rhinos, prairie dogs, and more. They also encounter scary (age appropriate) sasquatches! What's not to like?All animal fans and everyone who has ever wondered where all the locked doors and mysterious nooks and crannies in a zoo lead should read this fun book.

Short chapters, engaging story. Curious obsession with animal heads "rolling" and the word "rump" on the part of the author which induces giggles, but otherwise very enjoyable book broken into short chapters for reading at bedtime. My kids love it. A little spooky in places, but not so much that we had to stop reading. Even Disney movies have spooky themes. It's a multiple book series, so the story doesn't move much in each book. We're on book 3 now and hooked. Kids won't go to bed without it.

I read to my children each night age ( 7 & 9 ). I don't normally purchase a book with this many chapters but this book has held more sons attention nightly, they can't wait for me to read to them which make bed time much easier. P.S. I enjoy the story line as well, I highly recommend it.

My 7 year old loves this book and won't put it down. He struggles with some of the "bigger" words but overall doing well reading it. He is already looking forward to the next one.

I bought this to round out my series of Secret Zoo books and enjoyed it as much if not more than the others. I was glad to see the same characters continue in this book particularly because it is their individual personalities that help make the story. It was a quicker read than the other books in the series but still worth reading. Is suitable for an avid reader in the fourth grade and up. I have enjoyed the world Mr. Chick has created in his story line and can not wait for the next one. I recommend that you buy this book for your younger reader or yourself, even if you are a Grandmother like me!

I purchased this for my 28 year old son for Christmas - he loved it.

The cast of creatures, opponents and organizations in this book would make wonderful additions to any chronicle. Even, or especially, those that are *not* based on mages. For example, how would a vampire react if a member of his or her herd suddenly becomes infected with the False Awakening... and then another, and then another? How would a pack of Forsaken Uratha respond if one of their Kinfolk fell victim to one of the Ravaged... and encountered a pack of Pure Uratha investigating a similar anomaly? This book offers a wide spread of new role-playing opportunities for any World of Darkness game. Highly recommended!
