Overall this is not a bad book. It gives a decent layman's explanation of the overview of what is involved. This is an intro book and not a how to manual. The biggest complaint I have is a few terms and items are mentioned without a definition of what they are. One can put the book down and look them up by hitting the net. It is easy reading and explains the basics well enough. I am glad I bought this, however one needs to get more detailed information from more sources to build the aquaponics system.
The book provided very useful information; just what a person considering an aquaponics set up should be familiar with. Things to consider in getting a system started, An understanding by the beginner that this soilless ecosystem needs to be monitored regularly/daily for the health of the fish and plants, especially if one wants to enjoy some fruit for their labor. The nitrogen cycle information needs editing at location 526 of 718. Here it has nitrites being the end result instead of it being nitrates.Fish waste contains ammonia which is converted by the bacteria Nitrosomonas to nitrite then Nitrobacter converts nitrites to nitrates that then is utilized by the plants.A good read.
Pure crap, i am sorry that I purchased it. I was expecting, from the title, it to be a build book, as in how to build your system, I was expecting plans, but I download it, and what do I get? A ton of crap that I already knew, and that is freely available all over the internet.
With a title "how to build your own aquaponic system", you will be surprised to find out that the book offers no advice on how to actually build your own aquaponic system. The book covers some theory on what aquaponics is, but that's where the advice stops. Almost a third of the book (pages 67 to 89) punts another 2 books by the same author.Don't waste your money on this book. The same theory covered in the book is readily and freely available on the internet.
If you're contemplating aquaponics for self sufficientsy or as an enterprise this is a very good book as a first read before making a decision to go ahead or not.
I've read about a quarter of the book so far. A little more specific detail and pictures would be a welcome addition. So far it's been a good introduction to the benefits of growing your own produce and fish aquaponically
Well written book. I was sort of hoping that this had more of a how to do it approach with pictures, diagrams, and plans but it is not. This is however a good introduction to aquaponics for someone who has never seen the system in action. This book was a quick read and gave me several ideas for how to setup my own system at home. I am not interested in a tiny system to raise herbs and goldfish, I want more information about talapia and lettuce, and other salad vegetables. This would be a great companion to an introduction to hydroponics.
Bought this for my husband, want to incorporate this into our back garden. Always wanting to learn new things about gardening.
