My copy of Duane Scott Cerny's new book, Selling Dead People's Things, arrived yesterday and I'm already half way thru it. The stories are all different and all so entertaining. Following Cerny from a young entrepreneur to a successful business man gave me the insight into how self-made person's become who they are. I highly recommend this book even if you're not particularly interested in antiques or collectibles. It is much more than that. It is an enjoyable and delightful read that won't disappoint.
Danny has been a fixture on the Chicago antique scene (if you would call the caravan of dealers and the motley crews of pickers that comb overheated attics by day and forage dank basements by night a "scene") since the late 80’s/early 90’s. Wrigleyville Antique Mall should ring a bell to almost anyone who had any interest in vintage (RIP to the building that housed the menagerie—no great architectural loss there—all of the magic was on the inside ;-)) From the cast of characters that made up the mall dealers to the sales staff (you know who you are DM) to the customers, there was no place in Chicago on the North Side quite like it. You never knew what or who would come through the door! Was it an egg shaped stereo chair that seemed to levitate in the widow display or a macabre Halloween window that was not suitable for little old ladies or young children?! Hard to say! This book brings you on both a personal journey and into a small clique of dealers who never got rich (go ahead, check the Fortune 500 for antique businesses...I’ll wait) had fun trying to one-up another and above all, in a business built on skulduggery were honest and genuinely cared about themselves, other dealers and customers. (No words were either aged, plagiarized or otherwise manipulated in the writing of this review!) (Really Heavy Antiques forever!)

This book explores the relationships people have with their things. Since I’ve just packed up my life and put most of my belongings into storage to move to a new city, the stories really held me. Recently, several people I’ve loved immensely have died. We had to make decisions about what they left behind...their things. Things they cherished, things they just used without much care. This book amused me, and larger than that, made me think about how fleeting life is and how we take moments for granted.
