After reading the first book about Princess Saltana (Princess) I knew that Daughters would be fascinating. And it is! The book discusses her 2 daughters and 1 son and picks up where her last book left off. Her youngest daughter is a devout Muslim with an extremely oppressive mentality towards her society. Her second child is a wild child by Saudi standards but her mother loves her just the same. And Princess Saltana's oldest child, her son is as compassionate and liberated as his mother. She raised him well. This story takes place in Saudi Arabia where women are treated as second class citizens. The men use their religion to justify all sorts of heinous crimes which is sickening when I thick about it. These men who degrade women are cowards but they get away with anything they want. In the USA they would be called pedophiles and locked up in jail. But in Saudi Arabia they are free to do exactly as they please. This is also about a country that regards wealth and physical attributes of the most important things in life, money and sex go hand and hand. And women are treated as property to gain social and economic power. Princess Saltana is a heroine for telling her story, even though her family found out about her first book. She is also a heroine for preaching women's rights in a land that has no rights for women. She is a heroine because she sees hope in the future for the women of her country. The book isn't only about her daughters it is also about Princess Saltana's life and family. She is a deeply moving person with a lot of conviction. And I can only hope that one day all the women in her country will be treated with the basic human rights that they all deserve - but do not have. I just found out there is a third book about Princess Saltana titled Princess Saltana's Circle, I am sure it will be an interesting read too. Also I want to say that Jean Sasson is a genius and a brilliant writer!

I read "Princess" and was absolutely enthralled for about 3/4 of the book. I'm glad I read Princess Sultana's Daughters because I was curious how a person could have shared so much of their life experiences and not expect her identity to be revealed. This, the second book of the series reminded me that children who are raised in such an insular society have trouble developing strong values. I also wondered how they coped with the world in the 2000's. I completed this book, but really should have stopped after reading Princess.

It can be the USA or the highest society in Mexico City or another part of the world like Asia or the Middle East and women are found as part of a yet unacknowledged worldwide women's sisterhood all fighting for the same rights and full recognition given to men for half the work women do. Princess Sultana is no exception but even in her privileged status she speaks out for the injustice done by men to women financially and socially like the story she relates of the humble grandmother she knew and aided in the hope to stop the forced circumcision the woman's granddaughter was going to suffer. An abominable tradition not always followed but They failed.East or West women share the same inequality and discrimination camouflaged in different forms and shapes in family tradition. culture, religion or myths created by men and followed by women who are too burdened by work and responsibilities to care to analyze.In the US there's many forms of injustice despite "advances". Theres many Anita Hills serving a Clarence Thomas for survival of her job and professional position. Seldom a woman will shackle her chains loud enough to be heard. The main reason is the fear of rebellion who will make men put a women in check by making her to loose her privileges at home or in the office, or maybe both. A woman's highest handicap is her ignorance and perceived inability to fight for her rights. the acceptance of an unrecognized gender injustice imposed on her in subtle and not so subtle ways.women keep a forced silence for fear of loosing status and privilege and being set apart as "difficult" just as Anita Hill was. Too much is lost. We have one life. Princess Sultana is far away from us in Saudi Arabia and she makes us feel free and safe to evaluate and criticize a different culture and the status of Saudi women as mothers, wives and at times as secret lovers. Her obstacles are immense in a society ruled by religion and government enforced by a few. This is a fantastic book!! Lots to learn and do inside! Fun activities include hammering a nail, choosing what doesn't belong, and picking the right sizes. Great for little hands and for encouraging toddlers and young children to learn about tools!

Adorable! Definitely easy to tear and babies will have a difficult time using some of the pulls. But with parental supervision, it should be ok.

THIS BOOK WAS RIPPED UP AND COLORED IN....IT WAS TRASHED!

So awesome! Full of pages with real life tools and the motions they create.

2 year old son is very interested, but some of the activities are flimsy. I don't think it will hold up well if it gets a lot of use.

Purchased this for my niece's one year old. The small parts will be packed away until he is 2 or 3 years old. All Green Toys are exceptionally well made. The harsh California sun has not damaged our collection of outside toys.

If you are planning a trip to Switzerland you'll need a passport, suitcases, lots of money, "Swiss Watching" and "Slow Train to Switzerland". This book puts Swiss travel into perspective. Comfortably riding the rack railroads in the mountains today it is easy to forget the adventurous travel of 150 years ago. Conveniences, transport, hotels, even attire for a Swiss vacation that are taken for granted today by use of websites and ubiquitous travel agents were unknown when Thomas Cook first sponsored travel to Switzerland in the late 1800's. Easy and pleasant reading. A great read either before or after a visit to Switzerland. Where this is more of a story, "Swiss watching" is like a handbook; get them both!

If you like learning about other countries this book fits the bill. You will learn among other things why the Swiss became such expert watch makers, and how tourist travel to Switzerland literally transformed both the country and also helped to create the whole tourism industry around the globe. It is also fascinating to learn how the Victorians traveled and spent their time on vacation. The author could have used an editor to reduce some repetition, but otherwise this was a nice book that our "Grand Tour" Book Club enjoyed very much.

Trains and Switzerland are two of my most cherished things on this planet, so I came into Diccon's book a tad biased. Plus I had already thoroughly enjoy his earlier "Swiss Watching" project, and am pleased to share that "Slow Train to Switzerland" left me just as satisfied. Having worked in and written extensively about travel and tourism myself, I loved hearing about the origins of mass tourism through Diccon's Bryson-esque writing style. This is more than just a trip through Switzerland, but rather the foundation of what so much tourism is based on today. Anyone with an interest in Swiss travel, history, or simply the travel and tourism industry will be more than satisfied with this read.

Very fun and readable book. I was reading it just before and during my first trip to Switzerland, and could relate to much of what the author was saying. The concept of the book is an interesting take on travel writing - re-creating a journey taken 150 years ago and documented in a diary. The author's writing style is engaging and lively, and I emerged with some insight into travels during Victorian times and the beginnings of the leisure travel industry as well as a feeling for the people who live in the Swiss Alps. The old pictures and illustrations from the original traveler's diary add even more life to the story.I think anyone who has traveled, or is thinking of traveling, to Switzerland would enjoy this book. And it makes great airplane reading on the long journey to get there.

I have been to Switzerland five times to different areas each time. This book is GREAT! So interesting to learn about the development of tourism,railroads, hotels, mountain adventures, personalities. The author's descriptions of Switzerland today were invaluable and informative, even to someone who has been there as a tourist over the last 20 years. Now that I have finished the book---I am ready to go again! Read the book from the library, and then ordered the book from Amazon because I knew I would want to refer to the book again and again.

Great book that you can open up anywhere and continue on you Swiss tour. Interesting to see how things change and also stay the same. Be sure to follow the author on his other endeavors through Switzerland and around the world where Swiss have migrated.

Diccon Bewes has taken an 1860s travel diary and turned it into a fascinating account of the first Thomas Cook group tour in 1863 and added his own observations of the same trip and places, including Paris, Geneva, Chamonix, Sion, Interlaken and the Jungfrau area, Lucerne, and Neuchatel. A delight.

Fascinating story told by a talented writer. Diccon Bewes travels the same route as the 1863 first Cook's Tour of Switzerland, following the diary of someone on the tour. It's a travelogue with a difference, illustrating the history of travel and tourists, as well as observations about Switzerland then and now. It's educational as well as entertaining, and I loved it.

My wife and fifteen year old love John Flanagan's The Ranger's Apprentice series. We've been listening to the audiobooks for a few years now, always when we're on long trips so we can get a whole book in. This Thanksgiving we got away for a few days, and we listened to The Sorcerer of the North, the fifth book in the series of ten. Our trip was shorter than normal this time, though, but we ended up listening to the book during the quiet hours of our stay at a rental cabin.In this book, young Will is a man hand has his own territory to cover as a Ranger. He's pretty much a law unto himself, a spy and a force for the king. It was odd seeing Will in action as a man instead of a teen, although he isn't a very old man, barely into his twenties. I missed seeing him a Halt's side, or trying to figure out how to play the odds against the adults. But it was also nice to see him pretty much full grown and doing what he was trained to do.The plot is complicated in this book, and it took a little while for all the pieces to come together, but Flanagan is a gifted author when it comes to plots. Will is tasked with finding out what sickness has stricken down Lord Syron and who is truly loyal to him, and maybe sorting out who the eventual inheritor of the lands should be.I liked the plotting and the characters, the hiding and the spycraft that goes on throughout. Alyss, Will's friend who is also a spy, joins the mission and things really heat up on all fronts because during the action Will and Alyss discover that they're drawn to each other in ways they hadn't expected.Flanagan's sense of the world is awesome in this one. As Will traipses around the castle, the castlegrounds, and the forest outside the walls, the environment comes to life on every page. Flanagan has a vivid imagination and shares if quite elegantly with his readers.I also enjoy the author's subtlety, the way he leads you down a path and you start expecting events to take a certain turn, then he twists everything around so that you don't know quite what is going on or who to trust. Flanagan is at his best in this one.The only thing that will put some readers off, especially the new ones, is how the book ends with so many things left hanging. I howled when we got to the end, not prepared to let go. My son patiently reminded me that every book Flanagan does is more or less two parts. And that's true. Books five and six basically form one large story, as did the first pair of books and the second pair. However, the other two were not truncated quite so suddenly as events come to a halt in this one.I've got the sixth book in the series. I'm just waiting on another family trip!

This fifth installment takes place five years after from where book four has left off. Will is now a full-fledge Ranger managing a fief of his own until he is sent to the north to find out if the rumor is true about a sorcerer who has come back from the dead, per se. Once again, the story is good and entertaining, but my excitement is cutoff for it has abruptly ended. Gah, this author does it all the time...leaving his audience hanging up in the air when the peak of the story has just started. Why o why?! It’s a dilemma that makes me berserk.

For the first time reader of the series this book will pull you in and leave you wanting the next book right away. With the Rangers apprentice series you get a lot of story packed into pages as arcs span a few books. If it was an ongoing series where you are having to wait for next book it would be quiet frustrating. As a completed series with some great arcs it flows fairly well. It was fun to see our hero's growth and that of his friends.

I truly enjoyed this book, but it's a complete cliff hanger.Will has grown up by several years and is now a full apprentice. He is on a special assignment, disguised as a jongleur (wandering entertainer) whose mission is to discover what is going on in the strategically important Norgate Fife. The King is ill and cannot be healed, and there are rumors that an ancient sorcerer has somehow come back to life and is living in the forest by the northernmost fortress of Norgate.Will is mostly on his on in this book. Horace has only a minuscule role, and Halt and Crowley probably have fewer than five pages total devoted to them. Instead, in this fifth book, Will shares the stage with Courier Alyss, one of the orphans he grew up with. Will, however, is definitely the main star.There's plenty of Ranger action, adventure, and intrigue, plus Tug and the presence of a new friend, a deeply loyal and intelligent dog who (so far) doesn't have a name.The book ends with the mystery of the sorcerer solved, but everything else (the safety of the fife, the health of the king, a potential invasion of the northern neighbors, Alyss's safety, and what role Horace will play in the story) is primed for the next book. I'm grateful that I don't have to wait a year for it to be published! It's already on my bookshelf.A word of warning: as the characters have grown up, so has the language. Damn is used numerous times throughout the book. I don't remember there being true cursing in any of the previous books of this series.

I adore the “Legends of Tivara” world created by JC Kang with its fantastic blend of Asian culture with fantasy including dwarves, elves and half-elves. Thorn of the Night Blossoms (Children of the Black Lotus) is a prequel to that series, though it is a total standalone. It’s star, Jie, is a half-elf leader of a cell in a ninja-like clan of spies and assassins dedicated to imperial service who lives a second life (her “cover”) as a star apprentice courtesan in one of the Houses of the “Floating World”. This cover story blends right in with her actual ninja-like assassin job in a fantastic tale filled with intrigue, betrayal, friendship, love and truly incredible action. The author has clearly done his research on ancient Japan’s ninjas and courtesans. His version of the “Floating World” is an idealized view of the “Floating World” Yoshiwara pleasure district in Edo Period Japan (discounting the magic, elves, etc.), though you’d not know that if you weren’t a geek like me whose been fascinated with ancient Japan ever since reading James Clavell’s Shōgun. His vision of the assassin clan is also idealized and perfect - and astoundingly cool. This “Legends of Tivara” world is amazingly imaginative and I’ve fallen in love with it and (I think) read (and separately reviewed) every other book in it. Thorn of the Night Blossoms is the perfect backstory for Jie, a key leading character in these books. Fans of these books can rejoice to learn more of where Jie came from an what motivates her drive. Newcomers who know nothing of these books can rejoice in a fantastic, utterly cool, action tale set in a fantasy Asian setting that they’ve likely not come across before but which works so well one ends up thinking that this is a far better world for fantasy than the Euro-centric settings that dominate fantasy tales. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.

I really enjoyed learning more about Jie and her beginnings. I never knew that she apprenticed in the floating world and to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. In a way you would think she would be scared and not ready, but she holds the same strength as when you first meet her in The Dragon Song Saga.Mr. Kang brought the floating world alive. He makes it seem as though it's a place you can go visit. I think that this is going to go places.

Wow this is a Fantastic read. Jie and Lilian really have quite the quest. You feel you really get to know these Characters. This is a fast paced read. That will have you on the edge of your seat, it has you wondering whats going to happen next. There is plenty of twists and turns. I totally Loved how the Author brought out the characters and the surroundings. This is definitely a must read.Shauna Joesten

Jie as a younger person is just a fun read. I really enjoyed this look into Jie's earlier life. It is fascinating to see what the author has done here, Jie's complex personality is just as interesting, if maybe younger and more trusting. I look forward to seeing where Jie's adventures take her next.

A brilliant story of intrigue and love. Jie is a half elf and although she is already grown by human years, she she still looks like a young girl. She lives a life as a double agent. Both a valued prostitute and a spy. There is treachery and friendship. Love and betrayal.

Great little book with simple recipes, I like the "camping hacks" tips on preparing before you get to your campsite. The Citrus Chipotle pork was GREAT makes a great sauce to pour over too, and paired it with the apricot and almond rice pilaf. I used a 12" DO(book recipes based on using a 12"DO), and have used a 10"DO for some of the breakfast breads, and rice dishes...full recipes worked great in the 10"DO, just adjusted some of coal/briquette numbers in the recipe. I highly recommend this book.

Great layout, information, and meal planning. Goes over seasoning the oven at home or in the field, placement of coals, and multi-day meal planning. So far the recipes are simple and good, the best kind of camp food.

I just got this book but I have skimmed it and feel it is what I was looking for. I am new to Dutch oven cooking with charcoal. This book has a lot of info that I need to get started both baking and cooking with my Dutch oven. It talks about how to place your coals and how many coals you need for what temperature. There is a lot of info online about this type of cooking but if we lose power that won’t do me much good. I want to practice now so if we don’t have an extended power outage, I’ll be ready to cook outside.

As a novice Dutch oven chef, I found the intro sections very useful (how many coals for a given temperature, how to season, even a suggested camping menu). More importantly, though, the recipes are easy to follow and prepare, and the food turns out great. I've cooked my way through many (but not all) of them and have yet to find a dud. Depending on the setting, I've used charcoal, a campfire, and the oven in my kitchen, and despite my mediocre abilities, the output has been good.

Excellent camping cookbook I am a beginner at outdoor Dutch oven cooking and the book covers EVERYTHING from seasoning your cast iron Dutch oven and easy to follow recipes. Happy!!!!!

Nice, easy recipes. Would be nice if photos were included. Some of the recipe's were a little fancy, but only 5 ingredients so not too hard!

This is the perfect book to get you started on Dutch Oven Cooking. Especially how many coals to use , top and bottom of oven, to give you the perfect cooking temperature.

It's a mix of beginner knowledge mixed with some tips that can even teach an old dog new tricks. I like it.
