I'm middle aged and I've started to pay more attention to beauty advice. I want to look like I take care of myself, without looking like I'm trying too hard.This book is a quick read for a person like me. I knew a lot of the advice already, mostly from Missus Smarty Pants, who tailors wardrobe advice to your individual body type. But I got curious and picked up the book, realizing it was supposed to be for "older" women.The best parts of the book concern wardrobe (jeans, shapewear, stylish mixing and matching) and face fixups such as makeup and hair. Small, simple changes *do* add up to make a big difference overall. Just don't put your eyeliner a "centimeter" above your eyelashes. I saw that units mistake in at least two places. Whoops.The underlying current of this book is the advice of adding subtle, youthful touches to your look, without going too far and looking like a lady who doesn't want to admit to herself that she's no longer a teenybopper. You can't afford to make foolish fashion mistakes. You are an experienced woman. But you don't want to go the other way and look too stuffy, either. If you do not already naturally fall into the right place along the continuum, this book will help you develop that sense, with specific examples.This book runs the entire gamut of maintenance levels, from as-natural-as-possible ... to detailed upkeep ... to the super high-end maintenance that some women seem to require. I am able to ignore the parts about "extreme makover" services. Don't let it make you feel insecure if you don't want to devote that much time, money and effort to something as non-essential as your looks.I never considered the idea of having someone laser my skin to remove sun splotches. I just use a little more mineral powder. But there are some women who would consider that. This book tells them how to know if they can trust the person who is about to power-scrub their face. Advice from someone who's been there, done that. The author must be in her own high-maintenance category, unfortunately, falling prey to peer pressure in the world of the women's beauty magazine publishing industry.I wish they had used models that are older than 16 years old. Practice what you preach! What's wrong with a few wrinkles, anyway? And more examples for women with darker hair and/or skin, please! The advice should work for everyone, not just blondes. In order for this book to rate a "5" with me, it would have "real" women in all the photos. Stylish, confident ladies. And they can have wrinkles or even be overweight, and still love themselves and feel beautiful. And do away with the extreme makeover advice. Oh, wait. That would be a completely different book, wouldn't it.In the end, this book barely squeaks out 3 stars. There are parts I love and parts I hate. But for a person who has been neglecting herself and wants to catch up with the rest of us, this book is a good starting point. One stop shopping for beauty advice. A complete survey of all that is possible. That is, *IF* she doesn't get queasy or feel disheartened knowing that others are doing all sorts of extreme things.Just work with what you have to make yourself beautiful. Yes, it is superficial, but everybody wants to look their best.

I am 55 years old and many people gasp when I tell them my age. It is not only about having or not wrinkles, but how you present yourself - makeup, hair, clothes, accessories, and this book gives you the tips that you need to look 10 years younger. One more thing: I audition for commercials, plays, short films, and looking in my 40s instead of my 50s is against me when I try to get a part or a middle aged woman. That's the only thing negative about looking TOO young, but I love this book.

I love this book. I initially bought it for myself for tips on maintaining young looks for as long as possible (I'm in early thirties), thenHighly recommend! Chapters with brilliant buys are literally priceless. They will save yo so much money, you can't even imagine. No more costly trials and errors - only tested and proven the best stuff! I snapped pics of those pages with brilliant buys and keep them handy on my phone whenever I go shopping for cosmetics and beauty supplies. Always 5 star buys. Today actually I came to Amazon to buy my 7th copy of this book (all previous cries ended up in hands of my girlfriends and mom in law - everybody loved it and wanted a copy), searched for updated version with up to date brilliant buys, if available, and, unfortunately, learned that Ms. Krupp died a few years ago... I'm so sad... What a great author and incredible book! You'll be remembered, Ms. Krupp, RIP

I wanted to like this book. I tried. I am probably not the right audience, however.First the good points:Shape wear - She tells women to go to a proper lingerie shop and have a bra fitting with a professional fitter. Yes! I have worked in wardrobe for various Broadway shows for the last 25 years. I use one of the sources Ms. Krupp recommends to supply bras, corsets, etc. for on stage use. We ALWAYS send the performers to be fitted at the shop. Most of them "know" what size they are. Most of them are wrong. And most of them are thrilled to find how comfortable a bra in the correct size can be. I am rather buxom myself and I can tell you from personal experience how much difference a properly fitted bra will make.Diet & Exercise - Many have bemoaned the fact that diet and exercise aren't covered by this book. I beg to differ. She states right in the beginning that she isn't going to dwell on these topics because anyone not living under a rock for the last 30 years or so knows the benefits of a healthy diet and adequate exercise. (This is, of course, a paraphrase. Ms. Krupp was slightly more diplomatic.) And I say good. I'm tired of hearing about it, too.She also states (although many of the other reviewers seemed to have missed it) that going "natural" (i.e., gray) is a reasonable alternative to dye if you "can pull it off". I've been "pulling it off" for 5 or 6 years now and I still seem to keep working.Then there are the negative points:Celebrity photos - ACK! Show me pictures of actual people, not a gaggle of "stars" all done up for some event. Even very casual photo ops involve stylists, makeup artists, hair dressers and professional photographers. I work in the entertainment industry and I know how much effort goes into the pre-photo preparations.Also, many of the photos are of the "apples and oranges" variety. The Sharon Stone comparison being the most egregious. In the "Bad" picture she is clearly being shot by some paparazzo which she neither expects or desires. She looks like she's wearing someone else's lipstick that was put on in the dark in the back of the limo. The bright flash from probably less than a foot away washes her out. No she doesn't look great, but who would?The "Good" picture is taken at a flattering angle from a flattering distance. It's clearly a posed shot from some event where she WANTS to be photographed. Not to mention the hours spent with Hair, Makeup and Wardrobe.Fashion - Ms. Krupps mostly recommends things fashionable rather than necessarily attractive. Frosty pink lipstick? No, thank you. Never wear matching pieces. In that case, why sell them as a set? And my personal favorite, bare legs in any weather and all circumstances. Unless the weather is warm and the clothing and setting casual, this is terrible advice. No one looks good in business or more formal attire with bare legs. Most don't look good with bare legs ever. Not to mention that it ruins your shoes. And your feet.She also doesn't address the fact that different professions may have different standards of "look". Hairdressers, doctors and mechanics dress differently for work. Or they should.I think that this book is probably useful for women in high profile industries - fashion and entertainment come to mind. However, if you are a professional who needs to look, uh, professional, you may not find it very helpful.

Introductory Summary:The editor of this book is Larry C. Spears who at the time of this writing is the CEO of the Greenleaf Center for Servant-Leadership since 1990. The foundation for this book is grounded in the person of Robert K. Greenleaf who is the father of Servant Leadership Theory. Back in 1970, he wrote a small essay called “The Servant As Leader”, which introduced the term “servant-leadership.” That and other writings have influenced an entire generation of management experts and institutional leaders. Bob Greenleaf (1904-1990) spent his first career in management research, development and education at AT&T. After retirement, he began a second career teaching and consulting at institutions ranging from Harvard Business School to the Ford Foundation to scores of churches and not-for-profit institutions. During the tumultuous 1960s, Greenleaf tried to understand why so many young people were in rebellion against America’s institutions, especially universities. He concluded that the fault lay with the institutions: they weren’t doing a good job of serving; therefore, they were doing a poor job of leading.In 1970, Greenleaf wrote “The Servant as Leader”, a powerful little essay that continues to gain influence today. In it, Greenleaf described some of the characteristics and activities of servant-leaders, providing examples which show that individual efforts, inspired by vision and a servant ethic, can make a substantial difference in the quality of society. Greenleaf said true leaders are chosen by their followers. The second question one must reflect upon relates to “how one views their own sense of personal identity?” If transformation is to occur in the lives that one leads it must be happening in the life of the leader. All ten of the foundational characteristics of servant-leadership theory are grounded on the bedrock of this core truth. Ridged mind-sets in organizations find cannot be hurdled by a leader who is not aware of their own capacity for a ridged mind-set. Thus, this leader will not have the courage to present a vision that is persuades people consider a different path to an issue. The third question that one must reflect upon is, “How does one view other people?” In each one of these essays you as a reader will be constantly challenged to be more committed to the growth and success of those you serve as a leader rather than your own success.Thoughts for the JourneyOne of the criticisms that leadership scholars have levied at servant-leadership theory is that there is not enough empirical research that support the productivity of an organization implementing this approach to leadership. The book reads like watching one of her videos. I appreciate in depth look at all the culture surrounding death in various locations, and learning what options are available in different localities. This is over all a light hearted look at death, that can cause some serious introspection. Thank you for sharing your journeys with us Caitlin!

'From Here to Eternity' is a very interesting look at the various death practices of different societies or subcultures throughout the world. It is by no means exhaustive, but gives the reader a sample of what types of ways that death is handled. My only criticism is that it reads like a series of individual chapters / vignettes and lacks somewhat of a cohesiveness that an overall examination would possess. I often was looking for ways to link the chapters beyond the overarching topic of death, and I couldn't find it. It might have been interesting to understand why the author chose the locations she did, in what order, and how she moved from one to another (other than via air travel).Overall, a really neat book well worth the read. I am looking forward to more books by this author!

I love this author and I enjoy her videos on You Tube. This books exams death practices in different parts of the world in a compassionate manner. She is really teaching us, with her humor, intelligence and her gift for telling story telling skills, to be more open and comfortable about the dying process and alternative ways to plan a funeral. She has really opened my eyes about the funeral industry and unnecessary costs. I enjoyed her first book as well.

Finished within a day of receiving it because I did not want to put it down! The writing style is fun and attention keeping while still maintaining composure. As for the content, this was a great exploration into different cultures. This is a great book to introduce oneself to multiple cultures and to a variety of aspects in the global community surrounding death. A great read that I would highly recommend!

How interesting to learn about death rituals in other societies.The death practices that Americans see as "normal" versus those other cultures view as "normal" highlights just how unique each culture truly is. From the high-tech to the hands-on this book takes a look at many different customs and beliefs that are deeply meaningful to those involved, regardless of how strange they may seem to us. I love Caitlin's honest and quirky style and can hear her voice in the pages of her book. I've been following her "Ask a Mortician" YouTube series for several years and read When Smoke Gets in Your Eyes on the day it was released. I love it all! Through her hard work, dedication and encouragement of honest conversation, she is spearheading a movement in America to change the way things are "normally" done, explaining there is a healthier, better, more meaningful, MUCH more affordable way to deal with the inevitability of death and how we handle things before, during and after. This is a great read and gives such interesting insight to the world around us.

Another winner from my new favorite author! This one is rich in culture, and makes me a little jealous that these rituals have passed us for whatever reason. Love the Graham theft Parsons reference. One of my favorite movies, I secretly wish when I go that my friends would do.Thanks for another book that makes death less scary.

My little guy has been having trouble lifting off. These books have helped him in his learning to read journey significantly. We bought 5 sets and every day we read a box full. Reading one box a couple of days in a row to begin with helped (nice to feel confident, since he did just read them the day before). There are a few sentences that would be more natural written another way and before we're done I will have added a few things to them. The illustrations are nice and the repetition helps with memorizing the words. Would highly recommend this books to teach reading. The added story cards to this set are nice! My son likes to make up his own nonsensical stories when he's finished reading the books.

I bought these for my 5 year-old who really struggles with confidence in the reading department. Everything was hard for her and she became afraid to even try to learn and decode sight words. These books were a game changer! Knowing that she could read a WHOLE BOOK with minimal or no help gave her the confidence boost that she needed in order to begin decoding sight words at school, and in a very short period of time. I cannot put into words how grateful I am that a teacher-friend recommend them to us. It seriously may have made the difference in whether or not we repeated Kindergarten and it made her love learning to read.

This is a good start to reading. As an adult you may look at them and think "There is no real story here" or "This seems a bit too simplistic" but when your young reader is just starting to sound out words these books are great. They can work their way through the words one by one if necessary and the books are short enough that its not an insurmountable task.I suggest getting all three series that go together for the age/grade.BOB Books:First StoriesBeginning ReadersSight Words: Kindergarten

After spending an entire school year in kindergarten my son was still having issues with his sight words. That is when I decided to buy the BOB book series. My son enjoys sitting down to read his books every night. He actually brings them to me and asks if he can read now. As a mom that was worried about retention this is a huge plus.I think it may already be time to buy the next sets in the series. As long as they are as good as this set we will be a forever BOB customer.

During our reading time, I had a hard time to get my son's attention on the words of books. Most of the time he only liked to focus on the colorful pictures and scanned quickly at the word lines. So it's difficult to teach him reading and remember even the simple words. I gave Bob books a try and so glad that I picked it, since now the little boy has really focused on the words and learned them quickly, yay! The simple drawing of the books are intentional to withdraw the little ones' attention from the animated pictures, that's the main point. The only thing need to be improved is the connection between the word and the pictures. Sometimes my son can guess it based on the pictures like dog, cat, bird, bug without really learning the words. But it's helpful and effective to learn sigh words. I would strongly recommend these books for the very beginning reader to build up their confidence in reading.

Man oh man does my son LOVE reading these! He feels soooo proud of himself when he can pick up a book and read it from front to back. Best part was watching him do it with my mom ;-) Could it get to be too simple in a few more months? Sure....but he's already reading then, isn't he??

My son loves these so much he just pulls them out on his own. He loves that he's learning these words in class and gets excited when he is able to read them. This boosts his self-esteem and gets him excited about reading. Which is what we want! :) Cute little stories too.

Bob Books definitely met my expectation and my growing reader - 5-year-old - loved it. I love the simplicity and clarity of the pictures matching the sight words. Each page has an illustration, which at this level is so important for readers to see. My son loves reading these books using his Kindle. A cool feature is that readers — particularly those using reading glasses — can make the font larger by double tapping the screen. I personally prefer hard copies, but I don’t regret this since the product is less expensive than hard copies and we are also running out of room in the kids library.

First, I want to start out with saying if you don't get a hardcopy of the book and get the Kindle edition you're going to be disappointed. Much of why we love the Shadowhunter's world and Cassandra's writing is because of the small details and touches that she puts into her work. I had read the series when it first came out between my middle school and high school years and, to be in college now it was great to see the TV series on Freeform. Though I had a bit of early confusion, as I remembered the characters and storyline but the details of her mythological world had been faded to me. The codex serves as a great reference and collectable to those who adore the series and the hardcopy is beautifully crafted. The hardcover copy has an embellished cover that has 3D detailing and a very unique look to it. The inside is neatly broken down and holds the same terminology and even images for some of the content to really showcase the fantasy world even more. There are some little 'notes' that look handwritten as if done by Jace and Clary and are a great touch to the overall book. If you get a Kindle edition instead of a hardcopy, you miss out on the effects of the notes and the overall craftsmanship that makes it such a neat book as it all becomes the same format text and lacks in many of the details.

This is a fun addition to my collection of Shadowhunter books. There are a lot of interesting details within this little book. Most of the information is at least touched on during Clare's two series, but I think it is really interesting to have an entire book dedicated to the world she created. It doesn't hurt the book fits in with my other book.There are little hints and nods to The Infernal Devices while Clary , Jace and Simon, from the Mortal Instruments, "comment" in the margins. There is a lot of information packed into this little books. There are sections that are boring, but not every section on a textbook/handbook can be interesting! It raises the believability just a bit.I think the little book gives a nice glimpse into the Shadowhunter world and the Clave mentality that we don't always see from the characters within the series. The "comments" from our favorite characters contrast to the message from the Clave as well. Overall it is just a lot of fun that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I hadn’t intended to read this right now; I have so many other books I need to read. However, it was one of those times where you think you’ll just leaf through a page or two and the next thing you know, it’s three hours later and you’re half way through the book. Cassandra Clare’s world is totally captivating and I REALLY want to just sit and marathon my way through the rest of the Mortal Instruments series (I’ve only read the first book, City of Bones) but I have other books I must read and review first. The Shadowhunter’s Codex provides background information to the two series. I have seen some very minor spoilers in there – for example, I didn’t know about Simon’s status – but nothing that would spoil the series.Although I am an advocate of ebooks, this is one book I would strongly recommend buying in hardback format. Part of the fun of the book are Clary’s and Simon’s in-world notes in the margin of this Shadowhunter’s training manual. In the hardback format, this is represented by what look like handwritten scribbles. This has had to be translated into different fonts in the ebook and the formatting is often not quite accurate, leading to some confusion.

I started the book without expectations and I loved it. The story is fascinating and it becomes a necessity to know more about the characters while you advance in the reading.Now I need to read the entire saga!----Núnca me había llamado la atención mucho esta saga pero al ver tan buenos reviews y referencias de gente que lo había leído decidí darle una oportunidad y la verdad este primer libro me gustó mucho :).La sinopsis no sonaba muy prometedora pero todo el drama que se genera con respecto a los personajes, los misterios y la manera rápida en que la autora presenta más y más personajes logrando darles una definición especial que haga que uno los recuerde y ya "entienda como son" me cautivó.Las escenas de acción me parecen bien logradas y mantiene un ritmo entretenido y emocionante a través del libro.Me encantó el personaje de Luke y espero seguir leyendo sobre él, también claramente me gustaron Clary y Jace :).¡Ya tengo ganas de seguir leyendo la saga!

Gift for my daughter who has read the Shadowhunter books and she LOOOVES it. She read for almost 2 hours last night and has almost finished it. She says it is great for additional info about the characters and even cross references with other series by the author. Good purchase for any shadow hunter fan.

I love the Infernal Devices and The Mortal Instruments. This book provided me with a lot of insight into the Shadowhunter world. It set up just like it should be for the real characters. It has beautiful illustrations and I really enjoyed reading the notes written by "Simon", "Clary", and "Jace". I also enjoyed the parts at the end of the chapters where you could write your own answers. My favorite parts in the book were when they had a list of names that you could combine to create your own Shadowhunter last name and the rune section where they drew them all out. I also like the weapons *evil grin*. If you like Cassandra Clare and her books, this is the thing for you. It is also good to have read this before you start her new series (Last Hours).

only buy if you're a shadowhunter fan who really wants to know every piece of cannon. It reads like what its a manual and goes over things most readers already know.the origins stories are great are the illustrations and the notes scribbled on the margins, by Clary, Jace, and Simon, I think the reader is meant to believe the codex is passed around and used and reused.
