Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood, Book 3), by Charlaine Harris

From Booklist

Sookie Stackhouse is having man trouble. Her vampire boyfriend, Bill, has been distant and inattentive lately. Then he announces that he is going on a business trip, which clearly is more than it seems. After a werewolf tries to abduct Sookie at work, Bill's boss, Eric, tells her that Bill fell under the sway of his--Bill's, that is--ex, a sexy vamp named Lorena, and has been kidnapped. Eric wants Sookie's help in getting Bill back, and despite her hurt over Bill's betrayal, Sookie agrees to go to Jackson, Mississippi, to find her wayward lover. Eric has persuaded Alcide, a dashing werewolf, to get Sookie access to Josephine's, aka Club Dead, the local hangout of Jackson's supernatural element. In between dodging kidnappers, the advances of amorous Eric, and her growing feelings for Alcide, Sookie has to find out who kidnapped Bill and figure out a way to rescue him. With some droll touches--Elvis, now a vampire, is Sookie's faithful guard --Club Dead is ideal for readers who like their vampire fiction light, humorous, and fast-paced. Praise for #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels“It’s the kind of book you look forward to reading before you go to bed, thinking you’re only going to read one chapter, and then you end up reading seven.”—Alan Ball, executive producer of True Blood“Vivid, subtle, and funny in her portrayal of southern life.”—Entertainment Weekly“Charlaine Harris has vividly imagined telepathic barmaid Sookie Stackhouse and her small-town Louisiana milieu, where humans, vampires, shapeshifters, and other sentient critters live...Her mash-up of genres is delightful, taking elements from mysteries, horror stories, and romances.”—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel“The series continues to be inventive and funny with an engaging, smart, and sexy heroine.”—The Denver Post“Blending action, romance, and comedy, Harris has created a fully functioning world so very close to our own, except, of course, for the vamps and other supernatural creatures.”—The Toronto Star

So, I love the Sookie books. I do. She's so strong. She's wonderful. she's not perfectly thin and in shape. She's a size 10 and she's got flaws. Human flaws. And while I'm typically not a fan of vampire novels, I love these. The whole series. I love that she falls in and out of love. I love that she lets herself cry. I love that she gets scared and still triumphs and does the right thing and helps people.

Things are heating up!! Sookie’s world is definitely spinning out of control ever since she became entangled with Bill and the other Vampires. As the journey continues, Sookie begins to discover and uncover more about her will and level of endurance. The author has definitely changed my view of Eric. I like him more than Bill because there is no pretense about him whatsoever. Book 3 is filled with detail and connected dots that I did not get from the tv series. I’m looking forward to more in the stackhouse series.

Originally posted on The Canon! {http://canireadeverything.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-summer-of-sookie-club-dead-by.html}Club Dead marks a big change for the Sookie Stackhouse series, one that I didn't really notice in my first reading. In the first two novels, there's a big focus on Sookie's romantic life; vampires are still there, but they hang around more like ghastly Christmas ornaments in the background instead of playing a big role. Club Dead changes all of that.Sookie's relationship with Bill is on the rocks from the first page...well, the first line. "Bill was hunched over his computer when I let myself in his house." In the other books, Sookie and Bill have this vibrant connection; one could cut the sexual tension with a fang. Harris immediately sets a different tone with these thirteen words: the honeymoon is over.Sookie's world changes so much when Bill enters the picture that it's hard to remember that she is so inexperienced when it comes to love. Bill's aloofness (and subsequent problems throughout Club Dead) change Sookie's perception of not only him, but herself and men in general quite a bit. In short, Sookie's growing pains make the story. It's her transformation and development as a character that makes Club Dead stand from the others.New supernatural creatures are starting to rear their heads in Bon Temps, and I personally loved the different vibe of the werewolves. Vampires retain a different set of human characteristics than the weres do. Seeing the animalistic nature set against the cold and conniving vampires opens up not only a new debate for Sookie, but for me as a reader.I loved this installment of the Sookie series. Harris is opening so many doors for all of the characters, not only Sookie. My only complaint is Harris's writing tended to drop off a little more in Club Dead; instead of the wry humor and sarcasm I fell in love with in the first book, there's more of a straight, flat narrator. I miss the quirkiness of Sookie's first person POV.THE RATING:FOUR STARSWHY:- awesome character development- Sookie's personal life transitions connected well with the plot- only downside: writing fell off from the previous books

I found Sookie absolutely irritating and stupid beyond belief in this book. Her willingness to save Bill after such betrayal is just staggering to me. What he does to her at the end is absolutely reprehensible, yet she makes an excuse for him and lets it fly by. What a moron! Since when is she so super hot? I hate when characters become desirable to anyone in the book. That's not realistic. The vampires make sense because of her blood, but no one else should be drooling like they do. Sookie was stupid not to hook up with Alcide when she had the chance. He was stupid to hook up with Debbie. His sister must be stupid because she seems pretty clueless. Sookie has become a hypocrite. She puts down fangbangers, calling them pathetic because they have become addicted to sex with a vampire. Yet Bill can violate her in multiple ways and she still craves him as much as fangbanger would. In the first book, she whines about how she will never be able to cook breakfast for Bill. But she does this for Alcide, an attractive human man, someone she can comfortably date even with her "disability", and she still obsesses over Bill. The plot and action of this book were good, but I really didn't like Sookie in this one at all. I am actually surprised this book is rated so highly to be honest.

I bought the first 5 books in this series because I was a fan of the HBO show Trueblood. I was curious to see how closely the books followed the show. I can say that there are times when I can visual the show while I read these books. This is book 1 and I am on book 3 right now. Most of this first book was in season 1 of Trueblood, with a couple of very significant differences which I won't mention in case you've not seen the show. I like the characters a little better in the book - Sookie seems more decisive, Sam comes across as sexier, Bill less sexy and colder and more vampire like, and Eric his sexy self, interested in Sookie, but not figuring very largely in the story in this first book. But I think the show's Eric may have been given a bigger role as time went on because he was so popular (Eric was my fave vamp on the show). This will feel like old ground if you've seen the first season of Trueblood but I still enjoyed it. It's an easy read and you can finish the book in a couple of days, even just reading at night like I do.

I am giving the Kindle edition of this book only two stars, not for any deficiency in content nor for a lack of historical or literary value, but because there are so many typos that many sentences require reference back to the printed book to understand what the writer actually wrote. It appears that the publisher of this work simply scanned printed pages and then processed the output of the scans through an elementary OCR without benefit of a spelling checker nor any grammar analysis. We shouldn't have to pay good money for inferior products such as this.

The five stars are for the translator. Josephus is what he is: a first century Jew, soldier, historian, and opportunist. Without him we have virtually no record of the first thirty years of the Church, or the lead-up, execution, and clean-up of the Jewish rebellion against Rome, the most horrendous experience any nation, before or since, says the author - the worst possible war. There are stories of those who wanted to placate Rome to save lives and treasure; those who wanted to kill all Romans; horrible Jewish crime bosses who butchered the innocent; women eating their children within the walls of Jotapata while Roman siege-works (broken only by the bald heroism and brilliance of the author, so he says), starved thousands; breaking down Jerusalem's walls and Romans becoming sick at seeing what Jews had done to Jews, with blood running in high rivers down the alleys. After reading this book, you will understand why so many have identified the Beast of Revelation with Nero. You'll read the primary source for the famous mass suicide at the top of Masada. A 7 year war. A great tribulation. Many fulfilled New Testament prophecies within their own generation. If you're a Preterist, it's evidence that the premils could be mistaken. If you're a premil, you may have some explaining to do. Although Josephus exaggerates and clearly sucks up to Rome, The Jewish War is a must-read for any Bible student or church historian. The problem has been that forever, it seems, Whiston was the only translation of the book, and I'm guessing that's why so few people read it. Even if forced to read it for school credit, it made you want to cut your wrists. I discovered Williamson's translation in a bruised book store by accident a few years ago, and suddenly the book was a page-turner; I couldn't put it down. I missed meals. Then I was happy to find it on Kindle. You can get Whiston on Kindle too, but I see no reason to. Now, with Williamson's touch, The Jewish War is readable again, so there should be no excuse for missing this treasure!

This is a great book, but the Kindle version is awful. It looks like they did an OCR of the print version and then did no quality checking. At one point, it refers to the "great dungs" in the temple. The word "die" comes out as "the" almost every single time. As in "they were prepared to the." It's readable, but it takes some effort.

The book is a fantastic historical account of the Jewish struggle against The Roman Empire. It is my second time to read it . The first time was several years ago. I have enjoyed it more this time around

This was recommended to me during the height of the turmoil in Lebannon in the late 70's, early 80's, by a friend who lived parttime in Beirut. He'd said it would do a great deal to explain the antagonism and tension between Israel and the Palestinians and Arabs. And, it did! Fascinating to read. BTW, this was a replacement for me, since I'd loaned my first copy to someone and they liked it so well that they kept it!

Josephus was one of the greatest Jewish historians of all time. He tells the true story. The numbers used and the casuality figures are greatly exaggerated. In fact the numbers are in the range of one to ten in scope. However, the rich history and detail is amazing. It is what really happened in Jerusalem and surrounding area in the Roman war agains the Jews in 70ad.

Great insight into the political and religious infighting that was occurring in what today we call, "the Holy Land" during the time of Christ. A must read for any student of the Bible that wants to understand the vast and complex stage upon which the characters in the New Testament perform.

Highly recommended to understand the current crises of the middle east and prophecy of the biblical book of Revelation.Jocephus was a soldier and historian after the fact. He does a good job in keeping as neutral as one could at that time and to his credit by the survival and popularity of his writings at that time and even to this day. A must read by any student of biblical history.

This may not be as funny and real to anyone not associated with aviation, but those of us who have flown even just to the Private Pilot stage, can recognize the events in this well-written book. I suggest you also read the author's first book, "Hauling Checks," which is just as seriously amusing. These books are claimed to be fiction, and the experiences may not all have happened to the author, but they have happened to all of us who have flown airplanes.

If you love planes, flying, and satire, then you’ll love this book!

Very funny. Maybe a lot real stuff. Good read. CFI in an other day

This was a lot of fun. I wish it had been longer! It was great “fiction”.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.The hilarious and fringe world of aviation comes back into play in author Alex Stone’s second novel, “CFI! The Book: A Satirical Aviation Comedy”. Here is the synopsis:The SynopsisAn underpaid, overworked Certified Flight Instructor cheats death while attempting to teach a cast of incompetent student pilots to fly at a skeezy South Florida flight school; all in the quest to build flight time so he can get a "real job" at an airline. The planes break, the regs break, metal gets bent, students are lost at sea, and a Top Gun wannabe student, who has four hundred hours of flight instruction, still hasn't made his first solo flight. "CFI! The Book" is an over-the-top satirical aviation comedy that's loosely based on real world experiences of flight instruction, but if the FAA asks, this is all strictly fictional. The ReviewIt was fun, exhilarating and exciting to jump back into the world of Alex Stone’s fictional, satirical yet all too real world of aviation hijinx. An interesting approach to the satirical aviation comedy series that the author has created, this second book of the author’s actually will surprise readers as it alludes to a prequel setting for the first novel of the author, “Hauling Checks”. You can read my review of that novel using the button below. The story was sometimes heart-pounding, sometimes realistic but always hilarious as the author showcased many cases of impossible students and shady bosses. From an Italian student who refuses to show up to class, to an entitled student pilot who demands the instructor’s compliance and a sneaky boss who will do anything to squeeze a few more bucks out of these clueless students. The VerdictThis is a worthy successor to the first novel author Alex Stone published. Witty, charming, sarcastic and real, this was a well written satire that showcases the aviation world in a whole new light. The fusion of aviation rules and insider knowledge of the industry mixed with the hilarious fictional characters and scenarios the author has created made this one of the most unique follow ups I’ve ever read. If you enjoy humorous, satirical works or anything involving the aviation world, then “CFI! The Book: A Satirical Aviation Comedy” by Alex Stone is the book for you. Grab your copy today!

Alex Stone conjures up the most bizarre image of one of the most glamorous professions in the most unglamorous light: 12 starving CFI's in sleeping bags sharing a single mildewed Florida apartment, who cram themselves into a clown-car jalopy to ride to a flight school whose unscrupulous operator orders them to get out of uniform before using food stamps in the grocery store, and who hopes a student has a (preferably non-fatal) accident soloing so as to collect on the insurance, etc.- and it all might be true! And yet there are a multitude of small details regarding flying that are quite useful to the aspiring student pilot. A very good read.

I am a retired (part time) flight instructor, and I have to say I never saw this sort of behavior. Please tell me this is really satire and not even a little bit true.

Yes, this book has a lot of laughs. But, if even have of these stories have any truth to them, I fear for aviation!

Memoirs of My Nervous Illness (New York Review Books Classics), by Daniel Paul Schreber Rosemary Dinnage

Amazon.com Review

Daniel Paul Schreber began Memoirs of my Nervous Illness in February 1900 while confined in an asylum, as part of an appeal for release. Schreber, second son (the first committed suicide) of an abusive father, was at the peak of a brilliant career in Leipzig when he was appointed Presiding Judge of the Saxon High Court of Appeals. Alas, the stress of his new job proved too much for him, and before long he was hearing voices and feeling suicidal. Within weeks he was committed, having rapidly descended into madness, and was placed under the care of Dr. Paul Emil Flechsig. From the start, Schreber struggled to make sense of what he was seeing and hearing, and in fact Memoirs is so lucid and self-aware, so internally consistent and insightful, that he was released on its strength. Still, reading this man's prose is a lesson in subjective reality, by turns funny and terrifying. I existed frequently without a stomach.... In the case of any other human being this would have resulted in natural pus formation with an inevitably fatal outcome; but the food pulp could not damage my body because all impure matter in it was soaked up again by the rays. As Christianity alone could not explain what seemed to be happening to him, Schreber pieced together a complex theology involving a divided God with dark and light incarnations, whose "rays" and "nerves" interacted in various ways with humans. God was also his personal tormentor, in league with Flechsig to commit "soul-murder" by manipulating his nerves. Further, Schreber believed that he was being literally "unmanned" so that God could sexually violate him and conceive a new human race: "But as soon as I am alone with God ... I must continually or at least at certain times strive to give divine rays the impression of a woman in the height of sexual delight..." Schreber had a hard time believing in the "fleeting-improvised-men" who flitted in and out of his life, and grew convinced that he was the only human left in a world of shadows. But he did know that something was wrong. He would hear the birds in the asylum's garden ask him, over and over, "Are you not ashamed?" And he was aware that his bellowing, banging on the piano, and other bodily manifestations of God's manipulation of his nerves (or "miracles") were startling to others, to say the least. Many of Schreber's delusions had to do with escaping his body--the constant babble of thousands of voices in his head were infuriating, as was his inability to cease thinking: The sound which reaches my own ear--hundreds of times every day--is so definite that it cannot be a hallucination. The genuine "cries of help" are always instantly followed by the phrase which has been learnt by rote: "If only the cursed cries of help would stop." Memoirs of My Nervous Illness succeeds on many levels: as a memoir, as imaginative literature, and as a serious work of mythology. Flechsig makes a menacing and inscrutable villain, representing materialistic thinking and conventional reality--no help at all. Schreber, meanwhile, is the classic hero, struggling to stay sane in a cruel and capricious universe. --Therese Littleton

I cannot get past the tiny print--And I don't need glasses to read up close! I won't force myself to read lines of print that small. (And I think it's a translation, which makes it more of a trial!)

Not finished yet. A very hard read. Not enthused about the writing style. I've been reading it for several months now and just can't quite get it done. But there are some very plausible concepts to what is being spoken about, for instance I see some correlations with some of the Seth concepts about reality, space and time. I guess overall it's an okay book, just time consuming.

I wonder what cases he was working on while he was a judge and wonder if his work on them had threatened anyone in power, and thus Schreber was targeted. If true, I don't think they expected Schreber to experience what he did and even less so, bravely and courageously write it down for all the world to see. What did he see? Perhaps the true state of one's being (the construct that is one's mind) that somehow got dislodged, which when it found itself outside the mind, didn't know quite what to do about it.

One of my most cherished books in my library. This book is easy to misunderstand, in its intent and its revelation. I cannot even claim any authoritative knowledge, so this is only an interpretation.I think that the history of horrible and sadistic abuse at the hands of his father and the fact that his elder brother became mentally ill as well and then committed suicided only overshadows the importance of Schreber's experience and message. Knowing his history allows the reader to be dismissive about the authenticity of his experience. And that is exactly what one should not do.What should strike the reader is how "sane" Schreber comes across as with the rational, almost objective and detached, and lucid way he writes about his illness and experience in the book. He is most definitely in control of his cognitive functions and he proves this to be the case by being freed from institutionalization and returning to the bench. That said, he is still utterly convinced of the truth of his experience, and while able to function quite normally, he refuses to see his experience as delusional, that is, he still believes in the authenticity of his experience and his religious and metaphysical claims. It was this point that intrigued me the most. Now, if you were to be institutionalized for paranoid delusions, you would not be released if you maintained that your delusions were real and not delusions (at least, the doctors would not recommend you leaving even if you checked in voluntarily). How is the reader to take the paradox that Schreber presents: is he truly mentally fit by the end of the book or is he still ill due to his insistence upon the reality of his delusions? It is this problem that should make the reader begin to take Schreber more seriously and allow them to analyze the philosophy in his experience instead of glossing over it as sick fantasy. Or should we take Schreber seriously? In analyzing the world view in his memoirs I would say we should give him a charitable reading.Because of my conviction, I think of this book as more of a work of philosophy, specifically metaphysics, than the writings of a madman. While this memoir is an insightful look into the mental constructs of a paranoid schizophrenic it holds much more in its pages that needs to be accounted for. It is well known that schizophrenics have a tendency towards entertaining, as well as acting upon, strange religious constructs of their own mind (modulo the question why, that is for the psychotherapist to answer) but a treatment of Schreber's highly developed and thorough system would not be a waste of time and should be taken up.Here are some particulars that come to mind: his incorporation of a misunderstood zoroastrianism, his developed cosmology/cosmogony that includes a concern of extraterrestrial states of the universe, his preoccupation with evil and redemption, concern over the state of affairs of reality versus his own, an insistence on his own existential import in abrogating any danger to others, an equal insistence on non-violence even when he thought his person to be under threat, a peculiar ontology that admits immaterial objects as having substance, a philosophy of mind that gives explanatory power to a theory on the mind-body problem, and etc.I say all this in order to put forth the idea that had Schreber not been a schizophrenic, his metaphysics would, or at least parts of it should, be taken serious from a philosophical standpoint. Instead we have clinicians giving theories on why he had such delusions rather than countenancing the importance or non-importance of them philosophically. If you want to chalk up his memoirs as just a horrible experience of a madman and not a carefully thought out system, then you can. But, you will have to give some account for the fact that when he fashioned the book for publication it was according to a thematic (not chronological, but instead analytic) system by a man in control of his cognitive abilities. And, you will also need to give an account of how a madman was cognitively able to write such an accomplishment when no schizophrenic since has been able to do the same.Regardless of my own convictions in why you should read the book (philosophy aside), this book is ultimately a sublime treatise on the perseverance of the human spirit. Despite the sometimes horrific experiences that Schreber relates (this book is not for the timid of heart), he is always positive and upbeat in his telling. The fact that he is convinced that he will get through it is uplifting; and even though he was re-institutionalized for the remainder of his life after the death of his wife eight years later, his indomitable spirit of hope for himself and mankind leaves the reader challenged to do the same in the face of extraordinary circumstances.

An extraordinary account by Daniel Paul Schreber of his breakdown, his "hallucinations", his journey. A classic book in psychiatry. It is thrilling. So many of the terms he uses vibrate with us today: soul murder, nerve rays, his connection with God which involves both control and surrender, the way his hallucinations enabled him to act out being a woman in sexual intercourse (something he thought about just before he went mad). Freud spoke of hallucinations as restoring lost objects. Schreber spoke of a blackout in which the world (and self) were destroyed, then "miracled up" (his term) again in a new key. Freud's writings on Schreber (based on Schreber's memoir) are a must too. The two together make one of the most thrillng trips through a mad dimension that is relevant for every human being. I write of both Schreber and Freud from a contemporary viewpoint in my chapter on Schreber in The Psychotic Core. Right now I happen to be thinking of Phillip K Dick - the words that most appear in a word count of his writings were psychosis and schizophrenia. I don't know if he read Schreber or Freud's account of Schreber - but he would have loved them.Michael EigenAuthor, Flames from the Unconscious
