I am not a fast reader and generally have several books going at the same time according to my mood. But I couldn't put this book down. I was late to the office when I could be. It hooked me from the first page. The most incredible part of the book was the incredibly thorough job that Scotland Yard did in tracing every movement of the assassins some time after the event. If you ever thought Putin or the Russian state was warm and cuddly this book will certainly reverse that impression. The assassination of Alexander Litvenenko was meant to be undetectable because polonium, the substance used to poison him, does not register on a geiger counter. Nevertheless it was discovered and the assassins' trails tracked with incredible precision. You will not be able to tear yourself away from this story. Luke Harding wrote a gripping tale about an astonishing assassination by Putin's inept agents who were handsomely rewarded while Russia adamantly denied any misdeeds. The overall book leaves no doubt as to Putin's intentions toward the West.

One of the scariest books I have ever read, and saddest. Because it's true. The author makes it very clear that the Russian government is corrupt and uses poison and murder to get rid of people who talk. The man that they killed had a wife and a young son, he had even moved away from Russia and was still murdered. Sad..I would have give this 5 stars, but the difficulty of reading the Russian names, sometimes I would have to back track, to understand who the author was talking about it. I am glad I read this, its not good to go through life in the dark.

Sobering and comprehensive account of the dastardly assassination of Litvinenko by bungling Putin stooges. If you have any doubt as to the criminality of the Russian state and it's connection to organized crime (not that we are necessarily any better) this is the read for you. A superb piece of investigative journalism.

The cast of characters in this book was occasionally extremely hard to keep up with... but the action of the book was riveting and horrifying. More people need to know about Putin and his antics. The fact that these actions aren't common knowledge is even more terrifying than the actions themselves.

Learned a lot about the Russian tactics about how they handle their disadents. Either there murdered or if they live out of the country there poisoned. A true eye opener into how Russia deals with people that disagree with them. Well written, and the pace is one you can keep up with.

This one will scare you a lot, it is all true and makes you realize what awful things are going on in the world.

This is a shocking, well documented account of a compassionate, principled Russian investigator and journalist, Alexander Litvinenko, whose Soviet job was to root out corruption by Russian mobsters, many of whom were friends and associates of Vladimir Putin and became corrupt oligarchs. He apparently was too meticulous, professional and principled and was imprisoned, then finally fleeing Russia with his wife and son to Germany, then Britain, becoming a British citizen six weeks before being poisoned with a powerful radioactive substance by a trusted Russian associate he had known for over 10 years, Andrei Lugovoi, and Lugovoi's accomplice, Dimitry Kovtun. His further activities in exposing Russian mafia activities of gun-running and money laundering revealed "...the Kremlin not so much a government as a well-entrenched international crime group with truly big ambitions."His associations with MI6 and friendships with dissidents such as journalist Anna Politkovskaya, executed in the stairwell of her Moscow apartment building, endangered him further and made him a target of Putin's FSB, evolution of the Soviet KGB, of which Putin was a member. Determined to reveal the depth and gravity of Putin's support of corrupt Russian oligarchies at the exploitation of the Russian people, he gives a fascinating and meticulous account from his deathbed to Scotland Yard detectives, yet still honoring his commitment to MI6. Luke Harding is just as meticulous and principled in his writing of A Very Expensive Poisoning.

riveting and dispassionate account of political assassination in the UK. terse, compelling and well-written. i couldn't put it down.

I went into Kathryn Atwood’s Women Heroes of World War II hoping the experience would leave me with the same fascination I experienced after watching HBO’s excellent series Band of Brothers. While the book does deliver in that regard, in some ways I feel like I got so much more.Atwood paints vivid stills of her twenty-six heroines, offering up generally their most significant wartime contributions as well as fascinating peeks into each woman’s personality. Perhaps my favorite profile is that of Nora Inayat Khan, a petite and quite shy British resistance worker who failed miserably early on but came back to become one of the most fierce and determined women in the book. At one time, the once gentle girl fought violently with the unfortunate Nazi sympathizer sent to arrest her, clawing and scratching him so badly that he could only restrain her by putting a gun to her head.Atwood’s writing is straightforward and suitable for all ages, although it’s clear that the adventure-style telling of most stories is designed for younger audiences. Some profiles wrap rather quickly, but this seems to be a byproduct of Atwood’s desire to keep the book compact more than anything else. Each story could be (and often has been) expanded upon to form entire books of their own. With that in mind, Women Heroes of World War II serves as the perfect primer for those seeking a great introduction to women’s contributions in WWII.Thankfully, Atwood treats some of the more disturbing outcomes of her heroines with a grace that will allow even more sensitive readers such as myself to continue. Still, some of the stories were so moving or unfortunate that they brought a tear to my eye. It is always difficult to read of broken families, tortures, murders and the like, no matter how gentle the treatment. But Atwood is brilliant in showing that despite the overwhelmingly dark situations these women found themselves in, their character, moral fortitude, and faith made their lives shine so brightly that we can still feel their warmth to this day. Most outcomes are good, however. Each profile brings something new, unexpected, or even near miraculous. I found myself gut-wrenched at times, cheering at others, and sometimes just generally amazed. Atwood has taken my perception of women and their war time contributions from a merely national one to an international one. She skillfully illustrates that women abroad often fought two wars: one against the ruthless Germans, and the other against the sexism so deeply rooted in the culture of that day. Thankfully these wonderful women helped win both wars.In Women Heroes of World War II, I feel like I got what could be called a “Band of Sisters”. It’s about a group of women not bound by a military brigade or battalion, but by the greater bond of a common moral code, one that impelled them to help those less fortunate than themselves and to sacrifice everything, even up to their very lives, for the sake of freedom. It is an excellent read.

There are not enough true stories written about women who overcame great odds to do what they knew their conscience and morality was telling them to do. I am over half way through reading this compact book on numerous heroic women of WWII. This book was intended for young women and although I am not a young woman, I still am enjoying reading about these courageous women. My congratulations to Ms. Atwood on researching and finding all these women of which only a few I had heard of.

As a World War II history buff, I was intrigued to find a book that centers on the role of women. These "26 Stories of espionage, Sabotage, Resistance, and Rescue" do not disappoint. Atwood details the heroic exploits of women from all over Europe: Germany, Poland, France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and Great Britain, as well as the United States. Whether famous entertainers like Josephine Baker and Marlene Dietrich or simply ordinary wives, students, teachers, these women step up to take their place in history.Atwood briefly lays out the background history of the war and each country's particular role before delving into the actual accounts of the women, which is helpful. The photographs and additional information such as speeches also adds a haunting immediacy to the already stirring text. Included are very helpful "Learn More" text boxes which provide the reader with important follow-up information. Also included are a glossary and notes. This is a highly readable and engaging addition to the body of literature for grades 5-12 on this subject. Each account would easily work also as a short read aloud to inspire learning on this important topic. As a school librarian, I am looking forward to using this when my students study the second World War.

World War II was a horrific event in human history filled with barbarians who murdered, maimed, and raped millions of innocent people and destroyed countries and cultures. But it is also filled with heroes and heroines who did not surrender to fear or inertia or capitulation. These men and women fought against the evil no matter what it took. The non-fiction book by Kathryn J. Atwood entitled Women Heroes of World War II recounts the awe-inspiring stories of women who would not be enslaved and who fought the Nazis with their entire bodies and souls during that war. For all of them, it was not just a duty but a moral imperative.Women Heroes of World War II gives descriptions of the actions that these women took at great risk to save thousands of Jews from extermination, conduct espionage missions against the Nazi occupying forces, communicate vital information within their countries' resistance forces, and kill the Nazi oppressors as well as sabotaging their infrastructure. There are 26 valiant women from eight countries whose daring exploits are profiled. The book is short (266 pages) as to length but long regarding significance. Every page is used to astutely convey what these women accomplished, and those accomplishments are spellbinding. Atwood also gives references to books, articles, and videos about each subject within the text for further research, and she provides definitions of some terms used along the way. She has a smooth writing style that's easy on the mind's comprehension synapses. After reading this inspirational book, I think you will agree that these women's devotion to and fight for freedom and their courageous deeds to defeat the tyrants determined to take that freedom away are values and actions that we need to continue and that were on display over 70 years ago by heroines we need to always honor. Women Heroes of World War II is highly recommended.

Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat, by H.Leighton Steward

Amazon.com Review

Sugar Busters! was first independently published in New Orleans and sold an amazing 100,000 copies by word of mouth. Its advice may be hard to swallow for most Americans, as it advocates squelching your sweet tooth in order to lose weight. Those who follow the diet, however, swear by it, and no wonder: excess sugar consumption has been linked to depression, impaired immune function, and, of course, weight gain, as the body can almost effortlessly convert sugar to fat. Because sugar comes in so many different forms and hides out in unexpected places (carrots, beets, and white bread, among others) the authors list what foods are safe and which ones should be avoided and include a two-week menu plan for getting started. They also tempt the taste buds with recipes for unheard-of "diet" dishes such as Eggs Sardou and Filet Mignon with Bleu Cheese. This book will be too basic for anyone with a solid knowledge of nutrition, but for those who are overdoing the sweet stuff and want some handholding and help with shedding excess weight, Sugar Busters! can do nothing but help.

From the Publisher

My mother has been dieting ever since I can remember. When I was nine she had lost fifty pounds and was working as a lecturer for Weight Watchers. Eventually, she gained all the weight (and more) back again, and after many attempts at diets that didn't work, she resigned herself to being a "yo-yo" dieter--someone who can lose weight, but simply can't keep it off, usually gaining back more than originally lost. Why am I telling you this? Because three months ago I gave her a copy of Sugar Busters, not because I thought she should go on another diet, but because I wanted her to take a good look at her eating habits, and realize how they were affecting her quality of life. I had noticed that she would not really eat too much at meal time, but that she often had sweets inbetween, and almost always had dessert. And always had heartburn and stomach problems. She's lost over 25 pounds since Mother's Day, and hasn't had a twitch of heartburn. She doesn't follow a strict "you can never eat anything tasty ever again" diet, but moderates her habits and is really getting an enormous kick out of being in control. Next she'll be starting on the exercise part, following Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, by Dr. Weill. If she can do it, so can you.A. Scheibe

Similar concept--low carb, high protein--but not as draconian with regard to things like non-white bread, fruit and some natural sugars. If you actually read the whole thing, you'll have a good understanding of why a) massive carb intake is making you fat and b) how absurd our accepted dietary thinking has been for a long time.If you were thinking Atkins but either a) couldn't stay on it or b) could not fathom sticking to those menu choices for an extended period of time, I'd suggest this. Not as an easy way out--if you're going to do this, you have to do it right--but as perhaps less of a shock to the system.I've been on a pretty faithful Atkins routine for two weeks now and it really has worked as promised. And you do feel better with regard to energy swings (no more post-lunch food comas). But one week in, I new there was no way I continually eat this way for any extended period of time. Hence this book. After you've read this, you will never look at, say, white bread or potatoes the same way again!

I had purchased this book back when it was first written. Been struggling with weight gain lately and knew it worked in the past. Of course, could not find the book, so bought a used one.The diet is great! The book is easy to understand and really breaks the "calorie" myth. Lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks! 8 to go!!

I have used this diet many years ago and it works. My only problem is that after being on it for awhile I get terrible cravings. You just have to cheat once in a while but then get rigtht back on it and stay there.

Several months ago, as I was feeling completely at the mercy of tight clothes and rising numbers on the scale, several friends told me about the Atkins Diet and Protein Power. I did some research on the internet and concluded that I didn't think I could live with either of those plans. I stumbled onto the Sugar Busters book in the process and purchased it from Amazon. I started Sugar Busting on 6/6/01 and have lost 16 pounds so far. I do not have those same panicked, shaky feelings if I'm not consuming food all the time. When I'm hungry, it's an *awareness* that I'm empty and need filling. It took a week of feeling kind of lousy while following the program, and since then, I have never felt better. This is a way of eating that I can live with forever. I'm sure I've become an annoying evangelical Sugar Buster but I tell everyone I know (whether they have weight to lose or not) to try Sugar Busters for two weeks and see if they don't feel better.

I have a background of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)and depression and cured both problems by avoiding sugar. I have always checked my clients' sugar intake. When this book came out, it was given to me by one of my clients who wanted me to review it. When I read it, I was thrilled that it was written so clearly as to the way sugar affects your body and so accurately. When another client came in from the Pain Clinic with 7 years of pain and depression, I discovered how much sugar she was eating. I suggested this book to see if it could help her depression. She read it, and applied it. After only a few weeks, she was no longer depressed but also pain free. She had her life back and attributes it to not eating sugar and reading this book.I have found the book to be user-friendly especially to folks who have a difficult time sticking to diets. Highly recommend it.Note: Do not go off of pain medication without checking with your doctor first.

Awesome book. Arrived promptly. Brand new. Thanks for great service

My husband recently diagnosed pre-diabetic. Essential information and dietary guidelines. Lots of recipes to follow. Great reference book on eating.

I learned at lot from this book!! It really works

Memoirs are usually written by people who don't think anyone else will tell their story. And usually they are right. Then there is the "Glass Castle," a story which would be even better served if written as a biography. Thanks to her parents' diverse backgrounds and relentless uprooting of the family, author Jeannette Walls reveals both her unconventional personal history as well as offering a look at a cross section of the sad underbelly and weird fringes of American family life. Most memoirs ask and answer only one central, narrow and, ultimately, selfish question of "who am I?" Then they tell you and that's that. Biographies ask us to reflect on much broader questions such as "who are we?" Walls's memoir thinks like a biography - I wanted to put her personal experience into a larger social, political and economic context. That's what makes this book so fascinating, promising and incomplete a story. There's a much larger story in there and Walls knows it. Unfortunately, she can't be the one to tell it. Thankfully she told what she could in a lean, clean but not mean or jaded style.Any good story is about redemption, both for the writer and the reader. This memoir has both.2017 UPDATE: This book is now a major motion picture. Photo is from the movie depicting the author's life.

I just love this story about growing up dirt poor in one of the poorest and most depressing coal mining towns in West Virginia. I am a West Virginian, and there were many poor and alcoholic coal miners in my family, so I can really relate to the struggles this family faced. Ms Walls does an excellent job of telling her story so the reader feels like they were there. I could feel her pain, anger and disappointment to the point that I shed tears more than once. I read the book shortly after it was published, and just read it again after seeing the movie, which was also excellent. This book is easily one of my top five best books ever.

This was a memorable and troubling story written from a child's perspective (my favourite kind of story). Folks are commenting that Jeannette did not judge or condemn her parents for their miserable failings. What I suspect is simply that she was highly intelligent and had keen insight into their psychology and knew, on a deeper level than most children, they were "doing the best they could" in a sense. Only she knows what is in her heart. I got the sense she accepted and saw reality clearly. Her zest for life, insatiable curiosity and hopeful-ness in spite of her parents' failings made her a rare exception among people who are raised in such a way, in my opinion. What I admire most about her is that she never gave up and resigned herself or allowed what was clearly abnormal to become normal.

Excellent description of places, excellent representation of how people speak, excellent presentation of the children's growing maturity and awareness. The author writes with compassion for her parents, but as a reader this book made me angry over and over as the adults indulged themselves with selfishness, immaturity, and alcoholism, leaving themselves and their children hungry and cold and the children haphazardly educated, even molested. The children's transition from a life of abject poverty to new lives in New York City is painted with broad strokes, and I can't help thinking there's another book in there. They would have had to learn how to live as adults in an urban environment, how to relate to people differently, how to see themselves as something other than the bottom of the social structure. When the author presents the scene in which she learns that her mother actually had a substantial amount of money - a fact that is hinted at throughout the book - and fully understands that none of it had to happen, she handles it without anger. The closing scene with its repetition of the image, "dancing along the border between turbulence and order," is satisfying.

I began to doubt the truth of this memoir when she referred to Fish Creek Canyon, Arizona, as being West of Bullhead City. The only state West of Bullhead City is Nevada and Fish Creek Canyon is far to the East in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix Arizona. Sloppy work. Where is the publisher's fact-checker? If one writes about place and from place they need to know what they are talking about. I also found her descriptions of the desert generic. The Sonoran is not the northern basin-range.

This book was disturbing and depressing. I had hoped that the author would share some sort of insight into surviving neglect and abuse, but I sensed a sort of "top this" arrogance in her writing. She described her childhood as an adventure. Her recounting was emotionless. This is not a book that will help survivors of abuse. Perhaps it is for those who never experienced such hardship and find it fascinating. I read a few chapters. Now I am deciding whether to put this book on the shelf or simply throw it in the fire.

Excellent read. I finished this book in 42 hours. I could not put it down. I was surprised and amazed to hear it was on the New York Times best sellers list for 2 years in a row. Amazing. Not only did this book remind me of my own childhood. It reminded me of how far i have come and how grateful i am for all of my blessings. If you ever hear of anyone complain about their finances, send them to read this book. I commend the parents in this book for having emotional issues yet NEVER ripping away at the emotional beings of the children. One of my favorite lines is when the Dad said to Jeannette she has an "Inner Beauty". So touching. My 14 year old daughter brought this book home from school Friday the 20th Shouting in excitement and waving it in front of me saying MOM you have to read this book, I finished it 5:30 in the morning Sunday the 22nd. Couldn't even wait to get my amazon order on Sunday. I ate this book up. Thank you Jeannette Walls for writing your story, my daughter has had food every single day of her entire life. Now she knows my childhood stories are not crazy and i was not the only one who grew up starving. Blessings to you and yours. Heather Renee

Like the foldout maps and suggested tours.

Wow!! Loved the size and easy to read guide of Edinburgh. The restaurant selections were spot on!

A nice little book, with a very helpful pull-out map, but Edinburgh is such a vibrant city that parts of the book already felt out of date.

#47,492 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I eagerly awaited the publication of this book, ticking off the days on my calendar until the February 5th release date. Why? Because a story from a niece of the leader of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, was too good to ignore. While there are numerous books written by high-ranking defectors from the clutches of Scientology, the story of a blood relative of "COB" is unique. And thus, with much expectation, I read this memoir.StoryJenna Miscavige Hill, the niece of David Miscavige, was born February 1, 1984, and became a member of the third generation of a family of Scientologists. When she was four her parents gave up their lives as "public Scientologists" and traveled to Los Angeles to join the Sea Org. Since her parents were upper-echelon members of the church, Jenna was raised at the Ranch, a facility where the children of high-ranking Scientologists live. As you can imagine, Jenna did not see her parents often, but as she had no outside experience, this was not odd to her. Nor was signing a Billion-Year Contract to join the Sea Org herself at the young age of 6 viewed as odd. In her own words, she wanted to make her parents proud. What follows is the story of a woman who saw the inner machinations of the church. Her parents arrived in LA shortly before L. Ron Hubbard died, and while young, she witnessed the rise of her Uncle Dave as the leader of the Church of Scientology. Jenna describes the rigid lifestyle of Sea Org members, detailing the grueling work schedules and harsh punishments for mistakes.Ultimately Jenna comes to see Scientology as many others do: a cult that has the power to destroy lives. This eventually leads to Jenna fleeing from Scientology, dodging security guards who would forcibly return her to the base, and making the brave decision to publish a tell-all memoir. It should be noted that in the beginning of the book Jenna specifically points out that there are many aliases used for people within her book; she even takes the unusual step of listing which names are aliases. While nice, I never really found myself cross-checking that list against the name of a new person introduced in the text.Should I Buy It?This book is very well-written and done in a style as to be engaging and very informative. Jenna's writing style is descriptive and to-the-point, without beleaguering the reader with long-winded explanations. She also takes the time to explain various aspects of Scientology so that the lay person would understand: Scientology is a very insular "religion" with its own terminology for many aspects of its faith. Nearly every building or personnel title is abbreviated by initials, and Jenna takes the time to explain what each one means so that the reader will not be confused. Her writing is very intelligent and witty, dotted with personal reflections of the situations that she relates. So calm is her delivery that you are amazed, even as she tells stories of cruel punishments and abuses in the higher levels of the church. While there are many books from defectors of Scientology, this one ranks as special due to the simple fact that this was written by a close blood relative of "COB, RTC", David Miscavige. It is one thing for a high-ranking member to defect and release a tell-all memoir, quite another when a high-ranking relative of the head of the church does so. This is not to say that other books out there are not worth the time nor are they less honest, it simply means that you know things have to be pretty ugly for someone who could benefit from nepotism to run away! The Bottom LineWhether you are new to the study of Scientology's defectors or this book is adding to your collection, you will find it educational and very well-written. The Church has already blasted the contents as spurious, which is not new (their legal tactics and creed to pursue detractors and trash them is well-documented church dogma). The passion that Jenna had toward Scientology and her break from it is a story that is sad: it was all that she knew, and for her to see Scientology in a light other than positive is shocking within itself. Combine that with the Scientology practice of "disconnection", wherein she is labelled a Suppressive Person and active Scientologists are prohibited from speaking with her, and her courage is all the more amazing. Disconnection doesn't just stop at friends and co-workers. It extends to your family: and her family is deeply entrenched within Scientology. As mentioned prior, she was a third-generation Scientologist. Her Uncle rose to the top of the organization: her leaving the Church of Scientology (both literally and figuratively) disconnected her with all that she has ever known. And then she took the time to write about it. That is courage. If you want an in-depth look at the Church's machinations and want to know what drove the niece of the leader to flee, get a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed.

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a scientologist. My interest in books such as Jenna’s stems from the fact that I live in Clearwater, FL (Scientology’s Mecca – or whatever the heck they call it). For most of us Clearwater residents, we barely notice the Cult’s presence. If you live outside of Downtown Clearwater, you will rarely if ever see a Cult member. (I’m fairly certain they’re not allowed to go to the beach either – at least not in uniform – I’ve never seen any there in my 20 years of living here. Bummer for them). While most of us accept the fact that our Downtown has been destroyed by the Cult and abandoned by pretty much everyone else, many of us do feel sad that there is absolutely no reason to stop there on the drive between our homes and our beautiful beach. Although they claim to be huge, with millions of members, we on the ground here can tell you that their buildings occupy a few city blocks, and their actual cult members do not appear large in number. The average tourist to our beaches would have no knowledge of their existence, as the drive down 60 from TIA to the beach would not in any way reveal their presence. That said, their presence here still irritates me, hence my purchasing Jenna’s book (and others like it). Each time I read one of these “escape from the cult” books, I feel ashamed of our local child protective services. I’m saddened that my city’s law enforcement has no balls when it comes to the cult.Jenna’s experience, like that of most children within the confines of the Cult, is hard for me to fathom. I’ll never understand people like Jenna’s parents, who happily sacrifice their children to a life of labor and servitude, in order to further the Cult’s agenda. An agenda which, is clearly about nothing more than making money. Scientologists can say whatever they want, but the fact of the matter is, they collect copious amounts of money from their members and then fail to do anything but buy buildings (which largely remain unoccupied) and put it in what must be HUGE bank accounts. I imagine all of those bank accounts are off-shore. They pretend to do good works for the community, but they do not. They have no charities, no food banks, no help for the homeless population, no nothing. How is that a religion? They don’t even do anything for their own members. They just drive them into bankruptcy. The main takeaway from this book, for me, is reinforcement that the Cult is deadly to families. The practice of disconnection and declaring people “SP’s” and whatnot destroys family bonds. Kids growing up in the cult rarely get to experience true family bonding, and they know almost nothing of creating life-long friendships. Even if I felt compelled to let them have their beliefs and go about their business, I could never ignore the abuse they heap on their helpless off-spring.A corrupt organization that forces its members to escape under fear of capture is the furthest thing from “religion” in my estimation. I wish Jenna and her family well, and I am happy to know that she now feels the joy of true family. I hope her book helps others to escape, and I hope books like these, the various websites and Anonymous continue to keep our local residents here inoculated from the Cult’s grasp.

This is a very fair introduction to Islam written by a non-Muslim. I would have preferred more discussion of ideas found in the Holy Qur'an, however in general the treatment of my religion was enlightened and the author clearly attempted to be non-biased. I especially appreciated his discussion of the relationship between Islam and Christianity during the Middle Ages; his assertion that Christians were extremely brutal and destructive during the Crusades is one that Muslims have felt for a long time. Perhaps he could also have mentioned that this colors Muslims' feelings about the West to this day--a point that would be really relevant in the post-911 world! In any event, it was a far better treatment of that subject than is generally the case when this area is discussed by a Westerner. I also very much liked his explanation of how women are really treated in Islam: a far cry from the phony, patronizing sympathy for women that is often expressed by Westerners who, upon closer examination, can be found to be as prejudiced towards woman as anybody, or at least live in a society which still retains strong remnants of oppressive male domination. As far as the subject of African-Americans and their relationship to Islam, this was also a very good discussion, although when Wormser talked about names that African-American Muslims give their children, I waited in vain for the mention of "Bilal." Bilal was the first muezzin (one who gives the call to prayer) in Islam. He was a black slave freed by Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him!) and the name is popular with African-Ameicans for obvious reasons.Perhaps a little more attention could have been paid to Islam's traditional stance as the religion of SOCIAL JUSTICE in connection with problems of race in America, and maybe some relevant passages from the Qur'an would have been helpful, but in general Wormser does a really good job. I should mention, however, that in his translation of the adhan (call to prayer), he mistakenly translates "feLA" ("good works"), as "felicity." This is one of several small errors which could have easily been rectified if the manuscript had been vetted by a Muslim before publication. In general, though, for a short treatment of a complex subject, this book certainly deserves four and a half stars.

Richard Wormser's American Islam does an excellent job in explaining just what this important world religion is all about. He does it in an easy to understand manner without boring the reader with unimportant details. Wormser explains the early history of Islam in the Arabian peninsula and the USA, how Americans Muslims have adjusted in Post-9-11 America, and presents Islam from a Muslim teenager's perspective, bringing Islam into a today's context-something that his contemporaries have failed to pull off.In the second part of American Islam, Wormser discusses issues and problems concerning African-American Muslims, who make up the largest number of converts in America, and in an unprecedented heroic step, in Chapter 5 he narrates an issue that no Imam in America will tackle-discrimination against African-American Muslim males in love & marriage by other Muslims. For that alone, Wormser and American Islam deserves a Pulitzer. Five stars Richard Wormser on a job well done!

The book is really good when it came to discussing the Muslims and their views. There are a lot of interviews with Muslims on where they stand with parts of there religion. It is really intresting and enlightening. Except for when it comes to the Nation of Islam group, a little less then half the book then focuses on this African-American-Muslim religion. But doesn't give facts as the book did when it came to your ordinary Muslims. It then becomes more of a biografy of Malcome x and a few other gentle men. Excluding that part, because it really did not answer any of my questions, it just went on to explain this Nation of Islam group, the book was informative and an easy reading with intering facts and first hand stories!!!
