About the Author

Bill J. Leonard holds the James and Marilyn Dunn Chair of Baptist Studies at the Wake Forest University School of Divinity where he was the founding dean. In 2010 he retired as dean but continued to teach church history in the divinity school and the religion department of the university.Prior to joining the faculty of Wake Forest in 1996, Leonard served as Professor of Church History at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, 1975 . While there he was for a time Associate Dean, president of the Faculty Association, editor of the Review and Expositor, and W. W. Brooks Professor of American Religion. From 1992 to 1996 he was Chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama. Leonard is the author or editor of some 15 books including The Nature of the Church; Word of God Across the Ages:Using Church History in Preaching; God’s Last and Only Hope:The Fragmentation of the Southern Baptist Convention; Appalachian Christianity:Profiles in Regional Pluralism; Baptist Ways:A History; and Baptists in America. His most recent books are Baptist Questions, Baptist Answers, and The Baptist Bible (co-editor), both published in 2009. Leonard is also the author of over 400 articles published in a variety of journals, periodicals and books.Dr. Leonard holds a BA from Texas Wesleyan College ), an MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary ), and a PhD from Boston University ).His spouse, Dr. Candyce Crew Leonard, is professor of Humanities at Wake Forest University with specialization in Spanish literature. I read this book for my Baptist Heritage class. It was very informative and clearly shows that Baptists throughout history were certainly not a homogeneous group.

Love this book! A must have!

This is a great rad but it is long and sometimes it feels like it drags on but it really helps you learn the history of the Baptists.

I received the book in excellent conditons.

Bill Leonard's writing on Baptist history is the standard. His research is irrefutable and his writing style is wonderfully approachable for both academics and laymen.

A wealth of information.

This is a very detailed extensive history about Baptists. Everything is covered going back to our start in England. How we evolved into all the different Baptist groups and missionary starts as well.

I loved this book honestly. It was super helpful in my degree and helped me learn a lot. I like the way the book is set up, which makes it easy to read and understand. But it didn't come in the condition it said it was. I bought it used which you can expect maybe a little wear because someone else used it but the seller said it was in perfect condition or like new. It was definitely far from. It was usable but the pages were super bent. It had writing in it all over, and a lot was highlighted. I would have preferred they said what it actually was like. I wanted to return it because it was frustrating to me that they lied but i needed it for school so i couldn't without missing homework.

Just what I needed for my class. Most of the content to me is common sense information, however these days common sense isn't so common. The lay out of the content is well thought out and easy to follow me

It was useful, interesting, it was required for the class but it was not in good condition. Must be treated carefully. I’m thankful for the opportunity to rent although I will be stocking materials that I won’t be reading again.

Tanigami Konan was a renowned artist who, in 1917, began to produce a series of prints to illustrate varieties of exotic flowers, especially those of the Western world, in a traditional Japanese format. The prints were received with great enthusiasm and acclaim, and they're still sought after by collectors. Leave it to Dover Books, one of the best in the business, to offer such a modestly-priced book with so many beautiful reproductions of Konan's prints. Buy it for yourself. Buy it for a gift. It's perfectly lovely.

I associate most Japanese woodblock prints with artists like Hiroshige who concentrated on landscapes, street scenes and figures. This is the first book I've seen on the subject of flowers and they are breathtaking; striking composition and colors. A true inspiration for floral artists. The reproduction is excellent; the paper is thick and the colors are true. A real bargain.

Only the Japanese artists develop such a powerful style The briliant or subtle coloring, depending on the plant. is always suitable for the variety pictured.

It is amazing to me how beautifully detailed and nuanced these prints are, having bee carved on and printed from, woodblocks. They are lovely, and inspiring!

About the Author

Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, the son and grandson of proud New England seafarers. He lived in genteel poverty with his widowed mother and two young sisters in a house filled with Puritan ideals and family pride in a prosperous past. His boyhood was, in most respects, pleasant and normal. In 1825 he was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, and he returned to Salem determined to become a writer of short stories. For the next twelve years he was plagued with unhappiness and self-doubts as he struggled to master his craft. He finally secured some small measure of success with the publication of his Twice-Told Tales (1837). His marriage to Sophia Peabody in 1842 was a happy one. The Scarlet Letter (1850), which brought him immediate recognition, was followed by The House of the Seven Gables (1851). After serving four years as the American Consul in Liverpool, England, he traveled in Italy; he returned home to Massachusetts in 1860. Depressed, weary of writing, and failing in health, he died on May 19, 1864, at Plymouth, New Hampshire.

This is a nice collection of Hawthorne’s novels. Very nice quality of hardcover, book jacket, and paper. I’ve bought several of these Library of Congress books. Their quality is very nice.

Got this book because I love Melville. Hawthorne is also excellent; wonderful writing! You will love this writer and his style is fabulous.

I strongly agree with Richard's comments. Hawthorne should be read again and again throughout one's life. Even the great master of the novel, Henry James, found himself coming back time and again to Hawthorne as a touchstone of his creative imagination. We are fortunate to have dedicated teachers lead us through Hawthorne's work while we are teenagers, as adults we can read his work and appreciate it as a great work of art. Those who prefer to run through literature at a rapid pace would be better off staying with Marvel Comics. Library of America has provided a great service by publishing the Centenary Edition of Hawthorne in this beautiful edition. We are the better for it who can meditate deeply on the art and imagination of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

This text book is of high quality. the construction of it is beyond perfect. The text is easy to read.

Classics

This review is for the Library of America Hawthorne "Collected Novels" book. I reviewed the Hawethorne tales as "Predictable" due to his last work being published in 1850. The books from the Library of America are of very good high quality. Page-paper is very thin but not bible-thin, so these books might not work well for young readers who may tear the delicate paper. The book is about 1270 pages in spite of its small size, making it very portable.

A very slow read. Must have been a different age. Plot does not move.

I read this book in college and loved it. I've since misplaced the book and was so happy to find the kindle version. I love the story and it's an easy read. If you're looking for something that's captivating, but quick to go through, this is a wonderful choice.

Gerda, at the age of 94 lives across the hall from me. This book tells the story that she does not care to talk about. I now understand why. She is an inspiration to all who know her now and who see the gentle grace that she shares with so many dear friends, family and neighbors. I am sure that all who read about Gerda will shed a tear or two of their own.

I so enjoyed Gerda Weissmann Klein's book. All the horrors of the Holocaust, all the personal loss she endured couldn't destroy her spirit. She persevered over unwinnable odds. When she was as close as you could possibly get to death by starvation and deprivation, her life was spared. The way she met her husband, was, in itself, against all odds. This book is not fiction, and I kept having to remind myself that this woman, who was in her teens when the Nazi's destroyed her family and her world, and placed her in the first of several concentration camps, not only survived but went on to live a long, happy and productive life. To me, Gerda Weissmann Klein is a truly remarkable woman. I cried more than once as I read her story. I've spent a good deal of my life reading about the Holocaust, and I still cannot understand how or why the Nazi's did what they did, to Gerda Weissmann Klein, or the world. Nothing in my safe, comfortable life prepared my for the evil of the Nazi's. Perhaps that's why I feel compelled to read so many books about World War II. But no matter how many I read, I don't seem to be able to understand the Nazi's hate and complete disregard towards humanity. The world is still filled with too much hatred, and I believe that Gerda Weissmann Klein's book demonstrates the dangers to a world controlled by hate and violence. We see it all around the world, including in our own country. I would hope that we will eventually learn that hate is not the way, and possibly avoid another Hitler and another World War.

I first read this book in middle school and since then it has been my favorite book, I've probably read it at least 10 times. Gerda does such a wonderful job walking you through her life, her struggles and of course her survival of the Holocaust. What I love the most about this book is that even when Gerda is describing the most awful and heartbreaking moments, you never want to stop reading. I personally find a lot of spiritual moments in this book and often read it while flying as a way to calm my nerves. I cannot recommend this book enough; whether you're someone who reads many memoirs or not, this one is one of a kind. Gerda's story always makes me thankful that she shared her life with the world.

This is a story of a young teenage girl who lived and survived the horrors of the Holocaust. It's told with great clarity and of course it has parts that are difficult to read, but the main thing that rings true for me in this book is love will always conquer evil. It may take sometime, but this girl lost everything but her life, just as the title states, and yet, I hear nothing but gratitude, love, courage and integrity after everything she endured. Thank you for sharing memories that I know could not be easy to relive. It was an honor to read this book. A. Corley

I visited the Holocaust Museum in DC and received this author’s card at the entrance. After seeing the museum, I found out what happened to her. This book is Gerda Weissman Klein’s autobiography... (the name on the card I got at the Holocaust Museum). Excellent read and well-written, I was spellbound to read her story in depth. Would highly recommend.

I have read and re read this book and it never lets me leave without deep thought. That sounds a bit grandiose, but please don't judge this incredibly well written book by the fool who read it. This woman lived through hell and her writing is astounding. It flows and is a day by day account of her experience, and I loved the hints about what the future held. She felt she owed her comrades who could no longer speak a voice, and she told their stories with respect and authenticity. For those who believe that the Holocaust happened, and for those who don't....I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Out of all the books I have read recently about the holocaust this was the best. Part One: You fall in love with Gerda, her family, friends and home town of Bielitz. Part Two: You start the trip to hell. This part broke a little piece of my heart away and the tears ran down my cheeks. Part Three: Starting to heal and a new life.Gerda had a strong will to live and still just barely made it though the starvation and Death Walk. Her family were with her on the whole journey in mind and soul.

I have read many books about the Nazis and the Holocaust. This book was recommended by an old school friend with whom I was recently reunited. As kids we never talked about things like the war, but 50 years later we realized that our families came from the same Austro-Hungarian area. She recommended this wonderful book - a true story of a young girl who spent all of WWII in concentration camps. The prose is rich and bold, truthful and endearing. I highly recommend it!

I have been following the author and her daughter on their facebook page and seeing some of the lovely recipes from the book they are sharing, I decided to buy a Kindle version, when I heard it was available, because I just couldn’t wait one more day for the books to be mailed. Buying the Kindle version was a wise choice as I got to read this book and fall in love with the recipes, the stories, and the information this book holds.This is a well laid out book. There are LOTS of recipes and if you are a lover of southern cooking (or want to experience it) then you will not only love this book but possibly feel it is the only one you may need. If you are a lover of healthy foods or have food allergies then this is still a great book to purchase because the recipes also have alternatives to fixing them who need gluten free foods, ect.There are recipes for main meals, breads, entrées, deserts, salads and sauces to name a few. It is a door way to the famous southern foods and the opportunity to become southern even if you were born a Yankee.There are stories of family traditions, family ‘heirloom recipes’ and funny occurrences that happened around the recipes. The most important part of these stories are that the readers are reminded that food is not just something to satisfy a hunger but it is a tool to use to create quality family time, memories, a pride of cooking, an extension of love and hospitality that sometimes we lack in our world today.While reading I was impressed how knowledgeable the authors were of cooking by the tips and techniques they offer. I loved that certain oils were addressed, the temperature degrees they worked best at and the food that did best using each one.After reading this book I felt the ever important need to sit at the table and enjoy family and the conversation they offer. A rebirth of taking the time to cook instead of ordering out has occurred within me. It is also a book written by two authors , mother and daughter, that extend the invitation to adopt a southern style of cooking and life of raising your own vegetables or visiting the farmer markets to acquire them.I will be buying more copies of this book and giving as gifts because it is more than a great cookbook, it is a book that will make you laugh at the stories shared by not only the authors but their friends and family. It is a salute to the American lifestyle we knew as children but have forgotten because of the high tech world and hurried lifestyle. More importantly, this book gives you great recipes to share with your family so you can nurture loved ones and begin some traditions of your own.I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

This was a cute cookbook, I really enjoyed the stories before the recipes, they added a very personal and warm touch. They made me want to be a part of the family, as well as visit the south. Each recipe has alternative ingredients to sub out possible allergens, like gluten, vegan options, etc. It also has variations to change up the recipe a bit to make it more unique, as well as helpful tips on dealing with ingredients! Everything from how to get more juice from a lemon, to how long ingredients last and how to store them, and how to pick the best produce.My only qualms are that I'd love to have more pictures to go along with the recipes. For example, I've never even heard of a tea cake before, so I have no idea what they're supposed to look like!Of course, I'd also like it to be a bit longer, as I really adored it, but that just means I'll be looking out for a second book in the future :)

Other than the food allergy accommodations, which I don’t need, I didn’t find the recipes to be any better, different, or more interesting than the dozens of other Sou5ern cookbooks out there.As I started reading I found the family story that preceded each recipe to be mildly charming, but they quickly got old, seemed too long, and it became obvious that the authors were really stretching to find a story for each recipe. It pretty quickly just seemed like filler.I didn’t return it but am unlikely to give it much use and if I could have seen more in the preview would not have purchased it.

Perfect and I am a southern girl. Great recipoes and lots of ingredients are what the average person has on hand or easy access. Happy to have this book.

I'm a big fan of " A Forgotten Garden" and had high hopes for this novel. I actually found it to be really dark. Like, depressing dark. It was just so, so sad, and there wasn't enough redemption or hope that came out of any of the events to make me feel better! WHY? Why could nothing good happen to anyone? It seemed so needlessly depressing to me.I know real life isn't all glitter and roses, and I love a good tragic story with meaning, but this had too much tragedy. I tend to really dive into a novel and feel what the characters are going through, and I think that Kate Morton is a very talented writer, because she took me down deep with this. Just too far down!I still think it's well written, and was a good story. It just made me too sad, so I can't recommend it for anyone who is sensitive like me!

I just finished The Distant Hours, my second within a couple of weeks by Kate Morton. I just find that I have so much admiration for this writer. The plots, the writing, the suspense, keeping the whole thing tied together while skipping from character to character, location to location, time period to time period. She achieves all of this so smoothly, and we all know how hard it can be to make sub-plots and characters all hang together. The Distant Hours was yet another by this author that I couldn't put down. Toward the end, the whole story was coming together, some new aspects of it being uncovered on every page. The book gripped me on every page and would not let go, right up to the very end, where, just when you think it's all been revealed, there is another extra little...satisfying tidbit.After reading The House At Riverton (superlative story), I looked over the reviews of the other four from Kate Morton. There appeared to be a sort of pattern of a mystery from the past surfacing to be unraveled in the present. I thought I'd be disappointed if she got repetitious, but the first was so great that I wanted to read at least one more, and then if it looked as if she didn't have any new ideas, then I would stop reading her books. Well, I can now affirm, having read two of this writer's books, that they have not palled, and she is not a one-book-wonder who petered out. I loved The Distant Hours as much as I did The House At Riverton. My problem now is to choose which of her books I want to read next.

I fell into this book and became engrossed. The characters are mesmerizing. This book held my interest from first word to last, so much so that as soon as I finished reading it I read it again. I've never done that before. The audio book was equally spellbinding. I like to listen as I'm falling asleep but it was difficult to do so. The narrator kept my interest and I didn't want to stop listening. Very good storytelling!!!

This book was assigned for my book club, and I would never otherwise have read it. Morton is an excellent writer - her prose is fluent and even elegant, her descriptions are perceptive and even memorable at times. Unfortunately, the book is 80% descriptions, far too many repetitive at best, at the expense of both balance and reasonable length of narrative - this was a 200 page book inflated to 560.It would be senseless to list the many specific shortcomings. The simple plot and sub-plot just aren't in any way worthy of this many pages of disorganization and repetition, even when written well.

Honestly, this was my least favorite book that Morton has written. That aside, I’m so glad I read it. The story centers around the two elder Blythe sisters who care for the baby of the family, Juniper, 40 years after she suffers a mental collapse.In typical Kate Morton style, the story is a multilayered mystery that keeps the reader hooked until the last page.The MP3 disk format is great for listening in the car. One disk, now swapping.

This book did not disappoint in my expectations; interesting storyline, characters with depth, historical references and settings brought to life by the author. Enough twists and turns were woven in to keep one's interest. I particularly liked the ending which was not completely predictable and which contained a few new surprises.I refrained from giving this book 5 stars as the abundance of in-depth explanations of every action, thought, and detail of the characters' daily lives and surroundings seemed excessive. While useful when describing the mania which shaped the personalities of the characters of Juniper and her father Raymond Blythe, further editing of repetitive or "wordy" descriptions would not have taken away from the substance of the book.

The plot was very different, and I got involved in it right away. I like the period, 1940s England, and the way Kate Morton relates and intertwines the present with the past to uncover the mysterious plot lines. This book and The Secret Keeper are my favorite books by this author. Imagery is well written but at times, too much for me--- just ready to get to the meat of the story!

Very useful book. I own eight 400 day clocks. I bought all of them in non-working condition. With this book and The Horolovar 400-Day Clock Repair Guide (I bought from Amazon) they all how work. Some of the clocks where sold as is for parts only. I have fixed all eight and they keep good time. If you want to repair 400 day clocks (aka Anniversary clock) These books are a must have. I took my first clock to a repair shop and was told it could not be repaired. He was wrong.

This is a very good book for learning all the basics on how to service a 400 day clock, but it isn't clock specific like other books are. Make sure that you buy a book that covers your brand of clock for more detailed information.Overall this is a great reference book to go back to if you want to refresh your memory on clock cleaning and operating principles. If you can buy a used book then do so and save some money.

The author repeatedly tells the reader to refer to the Terwiliger book for many repair actions, especially for any work involving replacing the suspension spring or making repairs related to the spring. This book does not even allow one to choose the right size spring for a clock, because that information is missing, so reference to Terwilliger's book is necessary. I would suggest that anyone looking for a complete book purchase that one instead.If, however,one wants a supplement to the Terwilliger book, this one is suited for that purpose. The author clearly has experience with repairing these clocks and offers a number of clear hints and tips.

This is an excellent companion to Terwilliger's book.

In the kindle edition, the text is over the picture, so it's hard to read. Also, the text is cut off on the bottom of most of the pages, so just have to make to the story as I read and guess what it might say. Very annoying, and I wish I'd never bought this one for my little girl.

We have seen this episode on Disney Junior and enjoyed it. We enjoyed this book too. My 2 year old wants to use my Kindle Fire and feel like a big girl, and getting books for her is a great way. The only problem with this book (and thus the 4 stars) is that there was one page showing a picture of Penelope Poodle getting wrapped in ribbon by the twins but there was not a worded description of what was happening. Even I had to turn the page back again to look at the picture one more time to figure out what exactly happened.

BOUGHT THIS FOR MY GRANDSON THAT IS OBSESSED WITH THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB. HE LOVES THIS BOOK AND THE ILLUSTRATIONS.

It's a cute book--of course, it has Minnie Mouse. She loves those little clips of Minnie's Bowtique on Disney Jr., so I decided to show her how you can READ about them,too. When we first got this book on the Kindle, she wanted to read it every night. :) She loves the twins.

Good story but some of it was blocked by the Black thick lines which made it hard to read. Otherwise good story.

Missed part of the sTory due to the letters being cut off at the bottom of the pages. Also the words are in black and when they are posted on top of something else that is black you can't tell what the word is and have to just guess.

My daughter loves this story. She has had me read it to her until I am sick of it. I would prefer it were a little less.... celebrity stricken and focused on physical appearance, but Minnie is ok.

This book is really cute and the pictures look nice on my ipad mini - however zoom is disabled and you can only view the book two pages at a time - not a problem on the big ipad, but an issue on the mini.
