Sugar Busters! Cut Sugar to Trim Fat, by H.Leighton Steward

Amazon.com Review

Sugar Busters! was first independently published in New Orleans and sold an amazing 100,000 copies by word of mouth. Its advice may be hard to swallow for most Americans, as it advocates squelching your sweet tooth in order to lose weight. Those who follow the diet, however, swear by it, and no wonder: excess sugar consumption has been linked to depression, impaired immune function, and, of course, weight gain, as the body can almost effortlessly convert sugar to fat. Because sugar comes in so many different forms and hides out in unexpected places (carrots, beets, and white bread, among others) the authors list what foods are safe and which ones should be avoided and include a two-week menu plan for getting started. They also tempt the taste buds with recipes for unheard-of "diet" dishes such as Eggs Sardou and Filet Mignon with Bleu Cheese. This book will be too basic for anyone with a solid knowledge of nutrition, but for those who are overdoing the sweet stuff and want some handholding and help with shedding excess weight, Sugar Busters! can do nothing but help.

From the Publisher

My mother has been dieting ever since I can remember. When I was nine she had lost fifty pounds and was working as a lecturer for Weight Watchers. Eventually, she gained all the weight (and more) back again, and after many attempts at diets that didn't work, she resigned herself to being a "yo-yo" dieter--someone who can lose weight, but simply can't keep it off, usually gaining back more than originally lost. Why am I telling you this? Because three months ago I gave her a copy of Sugar Busters, not because I thought she should go on another diet, but because I wanted her to take a good look at her eating habits, and realize how they were affecting her quality of life. I had noticed that she would not really eat too much at meal time, but that she often had sweets inbetween, and almost always had dessert. And always had heartburn and stomach problems. She's lost over 25 pounds since Mother's Day, and hasn't had a twitch of heartburn. She doesn't follow a strict "you can never eat anything tasty ever again" diet, but moderates her habits and is really getting an enormous kick out of being in control. Next she'll be starting on the exercise part, following Eight Weeks to Optimum Health, by Dr. Weill. If she can do it, so can you.A. Scheibe

Similar concept--low carb, high protein--but not as draconian with regard to things like non-white bread, fruit and some natural sugars. If you actually read the whole thing, you'll have a good understanding of why a) massive carb intake is making you fat and b) how absurd our accepted dietary thinking has been for a long time.If you were thinking Atkins but either a) couldn't stay on it or b) could not fathom sticking to those menu choices for an extended period of time, I'd suggest this. Not as an easy way out--if you're going to do this, you have to do it right--but as perhaps less of a shock to the system.I've been on a pretty faithful Atkins routine for two weeks now and it really has worked as promised. And you do feel better with regard to energy swings (no more post-lunch food comas). But one week in, I new there was no way I continually eat this way for any extended period of time. Hence this book. After you've read this, you will never look at, say, white bread or potatoes the same way again!

I had purchased this book back when it was first written. Been struggling with weight gain lately and knew it worked in the past. Of course, could not find the book, so bought a used one.The diet is great! The book is easy to understand and really breaks the "calorie" myth. Lost 4 lbs in 3 weeks! 8 to go!!

I have used this diet many years ago and it works. My only problem is that after being on it for awhile I get terrible cravings. You just have to cheat once in a while but then get rigtht back on it and stay there.

Several months ago, as I was feeling completely at the mercy of tight clothes and rising numbers on the scale, several friends told me about the Atkins Diet and Protein Power. I did some research on the internet and concluded that I didn't think I could live with either of those plans. I stumbled onto the Sugar Busters book in the process and purchased it from Amazon. I started Sugar Busting on 6/6/01 and have lost 16 pounds so far. I do not have those same panicked, shaky feelings if I'm not consuming food all the time. When I'm hungry, it's an *awareness* that I'm empty and need filling. It took a week of feeling kind of lousy while following the program, and since then, I have never felt better. This is a way of eating that I can live with forever. I'm sure I've become an annoying evangelical Sugar Buster but I tell everyone I know (whether they have weight to lose or not) to try Sugar Busters for two weeks and see if they don't feel better.

I have a background of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)and depression and cured both problems by avoiding sugar. I have always checked my clients' sugar intake. When this book came out, it was given to me by one of my clients who wanted me to review it. When I read it, I was thrilled that it was written so clearly as to the way sugar affects your body and so accurately. When another client came in from the Pain Clinic with 7 years of pain and depression, I discovered how much sugar she was eating. I suggested this book to see if it could help her depression. She read it, and applied it. After only a few weeks, she was no longer depressed but also pain free. She had her life back and attributes it to not eating sugar and reading this book.I have found the book to be user-friendly especially to folks who have a difficult time sticking to diets. Highly recommend it.Note: Do not go off of pain medication without checking with your doctor first.

Awesome book. Arrived promptly. Brand new. Thanks for great service

My husband recently diagnosed pre-diabetic. Essential information and dietary guidelines. Lots of recipes to follow. Great reference book on eating.

I learned at lot from this book!! It really works

Memoirs are usually written by people who don't think anyone else will tell their story. And usually they are right. Then there is the "Glass Castle," a story which would be even better served if written as a biography. Thanks to her parents' diverse backgrounds and relentless uprooting of the family, author Jeannette Walls reveals both her unconventional personal history as well as offering a look at a cross section of the sad underbelly and weird fringes of American family life. Most memoirs ask and answer only one central, narrow and, ultimately, selfish question of "who am I?" Then they tell you and that's that. Biographies ask us to reflect on much broader questions such as "who are we?" Walls's memoir thinks like a biography - I wanted to put her personal experience into a larger social, political and economic context. That's what makes this book so fascinating, promising and incomplete a story. There's a much larger story in there and Walls knows it. Unfortunately, she can't be the one to tell it. Thankfully she told what she could in a lean, clean but not mean or jaded style.Any good story is about redemption, both for the writer and the reader. This memoir has both.2017 UPDATE: This book is now a major motion picture. Photo is from the movie depicting the author's life.

I just love this story about growing up dirt poor in one of the poorest and most depressing coal mining towns in West Virginia. I am a West Virginian, and there were many poor and alcoholic coal miners in my family, so I can really relate to the struggles this family faced. Ms Walls does an excellent job of telling her story so the reader feels like they were there. I could feel her pain, anger and disappointment to the point that I shed tears more than once. I read the book shortly after it was published, and just read it again after seeing the movie, which was also excellent. This book is easily one of my top five best books ever.

This was a memorable and troubling story written from a child's perspective (my favourite kind of story). Folks are commenting that Jeannette did not judge or condemn her parents for their miserable failings. What I suspect is simply that she was highly intelligent and had keen insight into their psychology and knew, on a deeper level than most children, they were "doing the best they could" in a sense. Only she knows what is in her heart. I got the sense she accepted and saw reality clearly. Her zest for life, insatiable curiosity and hopeful-ness in spite of her parents' failings made her a rare exception among people who are raised in such a way, in my opinion. What I admire most about her is that she never gave up and resigned herself or allowed what was clearly abnormal to become normal.

Excellent description of places, excellent representation of how people speak, excellent presentation of the children's growing maturity and awareness. The author writes with compassion for her parents, but as a reader this book made me angry over and over as the adults indulged themselves with selfishness, immaturity, and alcoholism, leaving themselves and their children hungry and cold and the children haphazardly educated, even molested. The children's transition from a life of abject poverty to new lives in New York City is painted with broad strokes, and I can't help thinking there's another book in there. They would have had to learn how to live as adults in an urban environment, how to relate to people differently, how to see themselves as something other than the bottom of the social structure. When the author presents the scene in which she learns that her mother actually had a substantial amount of money - a fact that is hinted at throughout the book - and fully understands that none of it had to happen, she handles it without anger. The closing scene with its repetition of the image, "dancing along the border between turbulence and order," is satisfying.

I began to doubt the truth of this memoir when she referred to Fish Creek Canyon, Arizona, as being West of Bullhead City. The only state West of Bullhead City is Nevada and Fish Creek Canyon is far to the East in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix Arizona. Sloppy work. Where is the publisher's fact-checker? If one writes about place and from place they need to know what they are talking about. I also found her descriptions of the desert generic. The Sonoran is not the northern basin-range.

This book was disturbing and depressing. I had hoped that the author would share some sort of insight into surviving neglect and abuse, but I sensed a sort of "top this" arrogance in her writing. She described her childhood as an adventure. Her recounting was emotionless. This is not a book that will help survivors of abuse. Perhaps it is for those who never experienced such hardship and find it fascinating. I read a few chapters. Now I am deciding whether to put this book on the shelf or simply throw it in the fire.

Excellent read. I finished this book in 42 hours. I could not put it down. I was surprised and amazed to hear it was on the New York Times best sellers list for 2 years in a row. Amazing. Not only did this book remind me of my own childhood. It reminded me of how far i have come and how grateful i am for all of my blessings. If you ever hear of anyone complain about their finances, send them to read this book. I commend the parents in this book for having emotional issues yet NEVER ripping away at the emotional beings of the children. One of my favorite lines is when the Dad said to Jeannette she has an "Inner Beauty". So touching. My 14 year old daughter brought this book home from school Friday the 20th Shouting in excitement and waving it in front of me saying MOM you have to read this book, I finished it 5:30 in the morning Sunday the 22nd. Couldn't even wait to get my amazon order on Sunday. I ate this book up. Thank you Jeannette Walls for writing your story, my daughter has had food every single day of her entire life. Now she knows my childhood stories are not crazy and i was not the only one who grew up starving. Blessings to you and yours. Heather Renee

Fantastic little book. I will definitely have this in my pocket while in Edinburgh!

Like the foldout maps and suggested tours.

Wow!! Loved the size and easy to read guide of Edinburgh. The restaurant selections were spot on!

A nice little book, with a very helpful pull-out map, but Edinburgh is such a vibrant city that parts of the book already felt out of date.

I eagerly awaited the publication of this book, ticking off the days on my calendar until the February 5th release date. Why? Because a story from a niece of the leader of the Church of Scientology, David Miscavige, was too good to ignore. While there are numerous books written by high-ranking defectors from the clutches of Scientology, the story of a blood relative of "COB" is unique. And thus, with much expectation, I read this memoir.StoryJenna Miscavige Hill, the niece of David Miscavige, was born February 1, 1984, and became a member of the third generation of a family of Scientologists. When she was four her parents gave up their lives as "public Scientologists" and traveled to Los Angeles to join the Sea Org. Since her parents were upper-echelon members of the church, Jenna was raised at the Ranch, a facility where the children of high-ranking Scientologists live. As you can imagine, Jenna did not see her parents often, but as she had no outside experience, this was not odd to her. Nor was signing a Billion-Year Contract to join the Sea Org herself at the young age of 6 viewed as odd. In her own words, she wanted to make her parents proud. What follows is the story of a woman who saw the inner machinations of the church. Her parents arrived in LA shortly before L. Ron Hubbard died, and while young, she witnessed the rise of her Uncle Dave as the leader of the Church of Scientology. Jenna describes the rigid lifestyle of Sea Org members, detailing the grueling work schedules and harsh punishments for mistakes.Ultimately Jenna comes to see Scientology as many others do: a cult that has the power to destroy lives. This eventually leads to Jenna fleeing from Scientology, dodging security guards who would forcibly return her to the base, and making the brave decision to publish a tell-all memoir. It should be noted that in the beginning of the book Jenna specifically points out that there are many aliases used for people within her book; she even takes the unusual step of listing which names are aliases. While nice, I never really found myself cross-checking that list against the name of a new person introduced in the text.Should I Buy It?This book is very well-written and done in a style as to be engaging and very informative. Jenna's writing style is descriptive and to-the-point, without beleaguering the reader with long-winded explanations. She also takes the time to explain various aspects of Scientology so that the lay person would understand: Scientology is a very insular "religion" with its own terminology for many aspects of its faith. Nearly every building or personnel title is abbreviated by initials, and Jenna takes the time to explain what each one means so that the reader will not be confused. Her writing is very intelligent and witty, dotted with personal reflections of the situations that she relates. So calm is her delivery that you are amazed, even as she tells stories of cruel punishments and abuses in the higher levels of the church. While there are many books from defectors of Scientology, this one ranks as special due to the simple fact that this was written by a close blood relative of "COB, RTC", David Miscavige. It is one thing for a high-ranking member to defect and release a tell-all memoir, quite another when a high-ranking relative of the head of the church does so. This is not to say that other books out there are not worth the time nor are they less honest, it simply means that you know things have to be pretty ugly for someone who could benefit from nepotism to run away! The Bottom LineWhether you are new to the study of Scientology's defectors or this book is adding to your collection, you will find it educational and very well-written. The Church has already blasted the contents as spurious, which is not new (their legal tactics and creed to pursue detractors and trash them is well-documented church dogma). The passion that Jenna had toward Scientology and her break from it is a story that is sad: it was all that she knew, and for her to see Scientology in a light other than positive is shocking within itself. Combine that with the Scientology practice of "disconnection", wherein she is labelled a Suppressive Person and active Scientologists are prohibited from speaking with her, and her courage is all the more amazing. Disconnection doesn't just stop at friends and co-workers. It extends to your family: and her family is deeply entrenched within Scientology. As mentioned prior, she was a third-generation Scientologist. Her Uncle rose to the top of the organization: her leaving the Church of Scientology (both literally and figuratively) disconnected her with all that she has ever known. And then she took the time to write about it. That is courage. If you want an in-depth look at the Church's machinations and want to know what drove the niece of the leader to flee, get a copy of this book. You will not be disappointed.

I am not now, nor have I ever been, a scientologist. My interest in books such as Jenna’s stems from the fact that I live in Clearwater, FL (Scientology’s Mecca – or whatever the heck they call it). For most of us Clearwater residents, we barely notice the Cult’s presence. If you live outside of Downtown Clearwater, you will rarely if ever see a Cult member. (I’m fairly certain they’re not allowed to go to the beach either – at least not in uniform – I’ve never seen any there in my 20 years of living here. Bummer for them). While most of us accept the fact that our Downtown has been destroyed by the Cult and abandoned by pretty much everyone else, many of us do feel sad that there is absolutely no reason to stop there on the drive between our homes and our beautiful beach. Although they claim to be huge, with millions of members, we on the ground here can tell you that their buildings occupy a few city blocks, and their actual cult members do not appear large in number. The average tourist to our beaches would have no knowledge of their existence, as the drive down 60 from TIA to the beach would not in any way reveal their presence. That said, their presence here still irritates me, hence my purchasing Jenna’s book (and others like it). Each time I read one of these “escape from the cult” books, I feel ashamed of our local child protective services. I’m saddened that my city’s law enforcement has no balls when it comes to the cult.Jenna’s experience, like that of most children within the confines of the Cult, is hard for me to fathom. I’ll never understand people like Jenna’s parents, who happily sacrifice their children to a life of labor and servitude, in order to further the Cult’s agenda. An agenda which, is clearly about nothing more than making money. Scientologists can say whatever they want, but the fact of the matter is, they collect copious amounts of money from their members and then fail to do anything but buy buildings (which largely remain unoccupied) and put it in what must be HUGE bank accounts. I imagine all of those bank accounts are off-shore. They pretend to do good works for the community, but they do not. They have no charities, no food banks, no help for the homeless population, no nothing. How is that a religion? They don’t even do anything for their own members. They just drive them into bankruptcy. The main takeaway from this book, for me, is reinforcement that the Cult is deadly to families. The practice of disconnection and declaring people “SP’s” and whatnot destroys family bonds. Kids growing up in the cult rarely get to experience true family bonding, and they know almost nothing of creating life-long friendships. Even if I felt compelled to let them have their beliefs and go about their business, I could never ignore the abuse they heap on their helpless off-spring.A corrupt organization that forces its members to escape under fear of capture is the furthest thing from “religion” in my estimation. I wish Jenna and her family well, and I am happy to know that she now feels the joy of true family. I hope her book helps others to escape, and I hope books like these, the various websites and Anonymous continue to keep our local residents here inoculated from the Cult’s grasp.

This is a very fair introduction to Islam written by a non-Muslim. I would have preferred more discussion of ideas found in the Holy Qur'an, however in general the treatment of my religion was enlightened and the author clearly attempted to be non-biased. I especially appreciated his discussion of the relationship between Islam and Christianity during the Middle Ages; his assertion that Christians were extremely brutal and destructive during the Crusades is one that Muslims have felt for a long time. Perhaps he could also have mentioned that this colors Muslims' feelings about the West to this day--a point that would be really relevant in the post-911 world! In any event, it was a far better treatment of that subject than is generally the case when this area is discussed by a Westerner. I also very much liked his explanation of how women are really treated in Islam: a far cry from the phony, patronizing sympathy for women that is often expressed by Westerners who, upon closer examination, can be found to be as prejudiced towards woman as anybody, or at least live in a society which still retains strong remnants of oppressive male domination. As far as the subject of African-Americans and their relationship to Islam, this was also a very good discussion, although when Wormser talked about names that African-American Muslims give their children, I waited in vain for the mention of "Bilal." Bilal was the first muezzin (one who gives the call to prayer) in Islam. He was a black slave freed by Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him!) and the name is popular with African-Ameicans for obvious reasons.Perhaps a little more attention could have been paid to Islam's traditional stance as the religion of SOCIAL JUSTICE in connection with problems of race in America, and maybe some relevant passages from the Qur'an would have been helpful, but in general Wormser does a really good job. I should mention, however, that in his translation of the adhan (call to prayer), he mistakenly translates "feLA" ("good works"), as "felicity." This is one of several small errors which could have easily been rectified if the manuscript had been vetted by a Muslim before publication. In general, though, for a short treatment of a complex subject, this book certainly deserves four and a half stars.

Richard Wormser's American Islam does an excellent job in explaining just what this important world religion is all about. He does it in an easy to understand manner without boring the reader with unimportant details. Wormser explains the early history of Islam in the Arabian peninsula and the USA, how Americans Muslims have adjusted in Post-9-11 America, and presents Islam from a Muslim teenager's perspective, bringing Islam into a today's context-something that his contemporaries have failed to pull off.In the second part of American Islam, Wormser discusses issues and problems concerning African-American Muslims, who make up the largest number of converts in America, and in an unprecedented heroic step, in Chapter 5 he narrates an issue that no Imam in America will tackle-discrimination against African-American Muslim males in love & marriage by other Muslims. For that alone, Wormser and American Islam deserves a Pulitzer. Five stars Richard Wormser on a job well done!

The book is really good when it came to discussing the Muslims and their views. There are a lot of interviews with Muslims on where they stand with parts of there religion. It is really intresting and enlightening. Except for when it comes to the Nation of Islam group, a little less then half the book then focuses on this African-American-Muslim religion. But doesn't give facts as the book did when it came to your ordinary Muslims. It then becomes more of a biografy of Malcome x and a few other gentle men. Excluding that part, because it really did not answer any of my questions, it just went on to explain this Nation of Islam group, the book was informative and an easy reading with intering facts and first hand stories!!!

This is apparently the fourth book in a series that considers "teaching history" to be synonymous with promoting racist stereotypes about "people with unpronounceable names." Sure, the Aztecs spent time on both ends of bloody conquests, but since when are genocide and enslavement topics for grade school humor? If you're a parent, you might want to check your school library to see if they're spending your tax dollars on this junk. Better yet, write the publisher (Scholastic) and tell them what you think.

I teach 5th Grade history, I mean "social studies", and let me tell you, as a teacher, I'm always on the hunt for material that will engage my students (and myself). The Horrible Histories series, and "The Angry Aztecs" in particular, are a godsend. My students and I love the information in the book and the humorous way it's presented (the illustrations are great, too).I've read other books in the series, and the author shines the same light on the unfortunate aspects of every culture he presents (see "The Measly Middle Ages" for a great take on Europe). If nothing else, you will be grateful to be living in the USA in this day and age when you're through with the book.Human beings have been (and continue to be) horrible to each other, but if we can learn how to move away from superstition and learn from history's mistakes, we'll be better off. These books will help in this endeavor.

Just spreads stereotypes about Aztecs. Yes it's biased and racist format keeps your interest because you might not relate to the constant discrimination colored people go through. This book should not exist. As teachers and/or parents.. please choose authentic literature FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY (different perspectives) that spreads truthful unbiased facts so that kids can develop their own opinions, morals, and be open-minded.

The book was fun and I learnt lots about the angry Aztecs. I recommend it to other kids, a great read I couldn't put down.

I love this book! Whike it could be better with having more on he religon, it was great. I reccomd this to any history lover like me.

My son recently relocated to Memphis and found this book to be perfect to finding great restaurants. Easy to read and great information for new comers to a city full of fantastic small unique restaurants. Definitely a must have!

Thanks to this book, my husband and I were able to find a good restaurant wherever we were in Memphis and we enjoyed every meal! The book is also just fun to read for learning about Memphis.

This book has been great for me as I have recently moved into this foodcentric city. Barbecue is just one thing that one should look for when hungry in Memphis, and the Food Lover's Guide directs a newbie to the other goodies that the city has to offer.

Spot-on reviews of all the best places to fuel up in and around Memphis. Wouldn't have made it to Velvet Cream in Hernendo, MS in a million years without it!

love it!

Review

“Absorbing....so many surprises, absurdities and ironies....Segregation is not one story but many. Luxenberg has written his with energy, elegance and a heart aching for a world without it.” - James Goodman, New York Times Book Review“Luxenberg has chosen a fresh way to tell the story of Plessy....Separate is deeply researched, and it wears its learning lightly. It's a storytelling kind of book....[He] skillfully works the military and the political background into his narrative.” - Louis Menand, The New Yorker“[Luxenberg] is a fine writer who tells this story in an engaging manner....Separate reminds us that our history is not simply a narrative of greater and greater freedom.” - Eric Foner, Washington Post“Offers a striking view of Reconstruction and of the tragic stillbirth of freedom in that era....Luxenberg writes at the outset of his book that the story of Plessy is a reminder that ‘history is made, not ordained.’ In his moving portrait of the many figures who played a role in the case, he confirms that idea as well as another: that even the most hopeless fool’s errand can emerge, in time, as an unassailable triumph.” - Charles S. Dameron, Wall Street Journal“A dazzlingly well-reported chronicle of an important period....Luxenberg repeatedly manages to tell us stories that capture both the hope and hopelessness that has been central to America’s long argument about race....An eye-opening journey through some of the darkest passages and haunting corridors of American history.” - Terence Samuel, NPR“A surprising, compelling, and brilliant milestone in understanding the history of race relations in America.” - Bob Woodward, author of Fear: Trump in the White House“Riveting and deeply researched, Separate tells the story surrounding one of the nation’s most devastating acts: drawing a sharp color line between black and white after the Civil War. The Plessy case was a knife that cleaved America, and Steve Luxenberg brilliantly reveals that divide with his rich narrative of admirable and flawed characters caught in the battle over racial justice. Every paragraph resonates in today’s headlines.” - Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs, and professor of history, Tulane University“Forensically researched, deeply moving, devastatingly relevant.” - Katherine Boo, author of Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity“This is a compulsively readable work of serious history, the absorbing and timely story of a disastrous U.S. Supreme Court decision, freshly told through the lives of those directly involved. Steve Luxenberg’s scholarship is deep and impressive; his writing even more so. This is history as it was lived, giving us a sense not only of the deep racism of the period, but the struggle of decent men and women to overcome it, in society and, most importantly, in themselves.” - Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down and Hue 1968: A Turning Point in the American War in Vietnam“A magisterial assessment of a U.S. Supreme Court’s grievous moral collapse...a definitive work on the 1896 legal drama that afflicts us to this day.” - David Simon, author and creator of HBO's The Wire

This wonderful book tells a story almost no one knows. I've spent my life reading books about American history but knew next to nothing about the famous Supreme Court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson, the case that made segregation lawful until Brown vs. Board of Education swept it aside in 1954.I worked for years with the author, Steve Luxenberg, but I am not writing this book to do him a favor--my intention is to do you a favor. If you like a well-written story that's central to the story of our country, you will love this book as much as I do.Luxenberg tells the story through the biographies of several of the principles: Louis Martinet, a newspaper editor from New Orleans; Albion Tourgee, a famous novelist who pursued the misguided legal strategy that doggedly tried to get this case to the Supreme Court; Justice Henry Brown, whose preposterous majority opinion was the law of the land for almost 60 years; and the first Justice John Marshall Harlan, whom one comes away admiring to no end. He had the wisdom to write "In my opinion, the judgment this day rendered will, in time, prove to be quite as pernicious as the decision made by this tribunal in the Dred Scott case." The author is fair in describing all Harlan's faults, but to any reader of this book, he is a hero. And so is the author. Steve Luxenberg is a gifted writer and he has a story to tell you. Do yourself a favor and read it.

The author sets the stage for one of the most important cases ever to appear before the US Supreme Court: Plessy vs. Ferguson decided on January 11, 1897. "Act one" is a comprehensive review of slavery and the separation of the races in the early 19th century. Here Steve Luxenberg introduces the main characters who play a role in this watershed court case. They include John Harlan, a Kentuckian whose family bought, sold and owned slaves. He was an attorneyinvolved in local politics and took up the call to fight for the Union during the Civil War. Though Harlan did not anticipate or support the emancipation of slaves, he was more intent on the preservation of the Union. Henry Brown, born in Massachusetts and a graduate of Yale, paid to have a substitute serve in his place during the Civil War. He worked as an attorney in private practice and wrote a tome on admiralty law. Albion Tourgee served in the Union Army until he was wounded. He was a judge, author, orator and newspaper columnist who championed the rights for blacks before, during and after the Civil War."Act two" occurs during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Both Harlan and Tourgee saw the bravery of negro soldiers fighting fot the Union. For Harlan the shedding of their lifes' blood by colored soldiers entitled them to the full rights and privledges of all citizens. Tourgee chose to live in North Carolina after the Civil War. He railed and wrote against the widespread prejudice, poverty, violence and murder of blacks during Reconstruction. He advocated for Federal funds to support schools for blacks. He strongly believed that education would help the emancipation of colored people. How did both Harlan and Brown come to sit on the Supreme Court? "Act three" is fascinating because their nominations and approval by the Senate were so very different from the very public and politicized selection of today's Supreme Court Justices. The "final act" is, in the opinion of this reviewer, the most interesting. Civil Rights advocates decided to promote equal rights by challanging the Jim Crow train cars in Louisiana that blacks were required to ride in. These cars were used for smokers as well, so they were smelly, dirty and less comfortable than the cars for whites. Jim Crow cars had been abolished in northeastern states since before the Civil War. It was up to the train conductor to determine the race of a passenger and enforce where he or she could sit. Louisiana was the perfect locale to challenge the racial laws because so many freed blacks had intermarried with whites in that state starting in the 18th century. Every shade of human skin was evident in Louisiana especially in New Orleans. Homer Plessy, a 29 year old, volunteered to be the test case in an intrastate trip he hoped to take in June 1892. Because the light-skinned Plessy refused to leave his seat in the whites only car, he was arrested. The case was tried locally with John H. Ferguson as the state judge. It took four and a half years for the case to make its way to the US Supreme Court. Robert Brown wrote the majority decision. He interpreted both the XIII and XIV Amendments to the US Constitution very narrowly. It was he who entoned the acceptablilty of "separate but equal" accomodations. John Harlan worte the sole minority opinion in which he called the majority ruling "...an assault on the Constitution ...Our Constitution is color blind and neither knows not tolerates classes among citizens." Some sixty years later in 1954, the Supreme Court unanimously embraced the depth and breadth of the XIV Amendment when it ruled in the school integration case of Brown vs. Board of Education. Separate could never be equal; it was just separate. Since the author did such an excellent job in the Plessy vs. Ferguson case, this reviewer ardently hopes that he selects the Brown vs. Board of Education for his next writing project.

There are any number of studies of the Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson which held that "separate but equal" was constitutional in railroad transportation, a doctrine that was applied consistently in many areas (including public education) until the 1954 Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. This very long book (505 pages of text; 58 pages of notes) approaches the topic from an unique perspective, somewhat broader than a traditional legal history would. The author begins his study in 1833, with Massachusetts railroads segregating passengers by race, and traces this practice up until 1896. Moreover, he focuses upon three key players in the Plessy drama--Justices John Marshall Harlan and Henry Billings Brown, and Albion W. Tourgee (who lost the case) through extensive biographical studies. In short, the author here is devoted to establishing the context of the case and the individual histories of these three actors going all the way back to 1833. He demonstrates that to really understand this case, you have to do a lot more than merely read the Court's decision. The author's discussions of the two Justices, especially Harlan, are outstanding. While there is not much to Brown, who wrote the 8-1 decision upholding the practice, Harlan is a fascinating character. While fighting on the Union side in the Civil War in Kentucky, he never opposed slavery and hoped Lincoln would just restore the status quo ante and not interfere in his state. He was certainly no "flaming liberal" and how he came to write his dissent in well covered in the book. Tourgee was a driven opponent of the practice, especially after having lived in North Carolina for 17 years after the war. He really achieved fame not for his work in this case, but as a best selling novelist. While his arguments to the Court were sound, he was way ahead of his time. Any analysis of the Court by Tourgee and his allies would have to have demonstrated clearly that their chances were zero with the Court's membership. It seems the Justices simply didn't see what injury was inflicted by "Jim Crow cars." I think this is why Chief Justice Warren in his opinion striking the practice in public education placed reliance upon sociological evidence (such as the "black doll" studies by Kenneth Clark) to demonstrate the severe emotional injuries inflicted upon segregated school children. One of the most interesting things I learned was that the Plessy case was a fully staged test casewith with both sides (including the railroad) working together to present the issue to the Court. The book is not blessed with extensive legal analysis--but that is not why you read this study. What the author gets to better than anything else I have read, is "the story behind the story" regarding the case. If you really, really want to understand what Plessy is all about, this is the book to read. What happened in 1896 is not so much the story as is why it happened. That is what this fine book is all about.

I just finished the book last night. The true story is very unusual but I guess for the time period for which it is written about-- it is not so strange. The time period is prewar 30s and stops apparently in the mid to late 1990s. The story opens with a funeral and the "Weedmonkey" is about to be buried. There was no definition for weedmonkey given by Lisa V. Proulx the author and daughter. The story begins strangely with the marriage of Virgie's mother to an Indian man and their journey to start a new job in the country. This journey ends with the settling-in of Virgie's mother and father and then Virgie's birth. This part is startling! But....there again for the times it is not so strange that Virgie was born in a cabin. Her birth will startle and surprise you as she was born dead. Her birth reminded me of the birth of my pet, Betsy whose first born pup was born dead with a grey fleshy mask over its head. Being my first pet to give birth I had no idea that I should have removed the covering and most likely that pup would have lived. This book review is hard to tell since there is so much of Virgie's life that is shocking. She struggled with hunger, homelessness, vulgar men who almost attacked her and yet she managed to live and survive. Her mother's way of surviving the poverty of her life was to sell herself for goods that were needed for surviving. The aloneness of that poor family and children was hard to think about. It was one challenge after another for Virgie to survive in a world that both her mother and father had provided. Her mother became locked into her life style and appetites and the father simply was surviving in his own primitive way. You simply cannot read the story with an attitude of blame. The times and place marked the hardships that Virgie's family had to endure. All along, I felt that Virgie was not aware that her mother and father simply was responding to the "lack" in their environment. Virgie and her brother and sisters were caught up in the web that the time and poverty and place of their life.Virgie made good choices. She was able to see the ugliness that could have shaped her life. She tried to protect herself and her sister from the Uncle molesters that lurked all around her. She said she always ran. What choice did she have? You will have to read the read this book to understand Virgie's dilemma. All around her was torment and lack. She was always hungry and dirty and she made choices that looked like she was running away but that was the intelligent option open for a clear thinking young girl. Luckily, Virgie's story about her mother ended on a hopeful note. She saw that her mother was truly beautiful though she had died. It was like all the dirt and badness had not touched her mother's truly beautiful soul. I think Virgie had come to the peaceful acceptance of her mother's life and perhaps forgave her mother for making her the daughter of the town hore.

This book is not for the faint-hearted. It is a story of grinding poverty, of love and hate, of ultimate redemption. It is the saga of a girl who could easily have taken the same road as her mother but instead, through personal strength, managed to break the cycle and create a very different life. I live in the same geographical area of Maryland as the author and I hope to find out if she makes personal appearances at our local libraries and other venues. This book was so compelling that I read it in one long afternoon and hope to read other books by her.

This book reminded of my home life growing up in w.v.a During the 50's my father was an alcholic a coal miner we were very poor. I can relate to the feelings of virgiee. After my father died I had to forgive him for how we were raised. This book was like reliving my life over except for my mother she was A wonderful mother the book was a very good read.

A detached narrative of facts strung together that are the author's life. Feral cats treated their offspring better than her own parents did. It was appalling, reading about her childhood. Reading between the lines, I think she treated her oldest daughter with some of the same neglect she was subjected to. Her second husband was a cold, controlling man. A good story, but one has to have a strong stomach to read it.

I was attracted to this story because of the time period. My grandmother was born in 1912, so I thought this would remind me a bit of her and her incredible stories. The story was a great one, but I can tell that it wasn't written by the protagonist. The author is telling her mother's stories, so there is a bit of distance when she writes. There isn't too much emotion there. This is also a reflection of the time, most likely. People didn't dwell too much on anything back then. The only thing that truly bothered my about the story was the progression, there was never a moment leading up to a climax. It was just written as if nothing was more important than anything else. Also, the author would jump time periods, which irks me in general. It needs a bit of editing, but nothing major. It's still a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves memoirs.

This read was difficult to put down because it moved along at a rapid pace. However the reading was jarred frequently by poorly constructed sentences and unfortunate grammar. It's almost as if the reader is supposed to read a Kentucky hills accent into one's mind as the words flow. But on one hand the technique isn't necessary (especially when the narrator tries so desperately to get away from that burden), and it is jarring combined with numerous misspelled or edited words in the kindle translation. I am not sorry I read this tome, but am not ready to recommend it as a revelation, or a memorable and remarkable uplifting story given the aforementioned problems with reading.

It's interesting because we try to tell ourselves that we want things to be different when we become adults and have children. Then, at some point in our lives, we realize we have been repeating history without knowing it. We can sometimes learn from this or not think it is a big deal and continue to make the same mistakes. Life is what you make it.

Very interesting and different biography. This lets you see what life was like in this area - somewhat near Appalachia. I would give this four stars just for the honesty. It's an example of a true story with no apologies. I would have enjoyed more dialogue. The dialogue that was included was very enjoyable. Also, would enjoy more emotional response from the author as some of these events were traumatic.
